To scar this easily?

Every little thing I do seems to scar, even superficial cuts that don't even need a plaster or my attention. They hang around forever: I have scars from my childhood from cuts so minor I didn't even stop what I was doing or tell anyone - e.g. caught my arm very lightly on a sharp tile at the swimming baths, it was minor enough to carry on swimming, yet still have the scar.

Is this usual and what can I do about it? I've got an ugly new scar forming (mishap with a broken plate about a month ago) and want to minimise it if I can.

How old are you? Younger people actually get worse scars because they have more collagen. Silicone and scar massage is best treatment - get some silicone gel and break the scar tissue up before 6 week mark (after cut) is possible and keep it up for a few months - helps promote a flat thin scar that fades. Also remember that every wound will leave a scar - it is inevitable and normal - even from childhood wounds. So having 'no scar' is not likely, best outcome is a line that fades to become eventually barely visible

Could it be keloid?

Flofferton · 15/07/2017 01:01

I was thinking keloid too. Are you Afro Caribbean and are the scars raised?

Aquamarine1029 · 15/07/2017 01:11

White people keloid, too. I do, and I have blond hair and blue eyes. Vitamin E oil helps.

moutonfou · 15/07/2017 01:12

Hmm no I'm not Afro Caribbean and having googled keloid, they're not as extreme as that - just slightly raised and white in colour, but clearly follow the line of the original wound. I am in my late twenties.

I get hypertrophic scars, similar to keloid except they only stay the size of the actual wound (and eventually get smaller). Minor scratches/grazes will only be slightly raised and white, but worse injuries can look pretty bad.

Do you have a lot of dark hair? That's a usual sign.

Minor ones can be treated with silicone gel (brand: ScarSil) and massages, but they'll never go. Can just be less red/raised/obvious.

MumsOnCrack · 15/07/2017 01:36

I have the same but have used bio oil for a while and it seems to help?

MumsOnCrack · 15/07/2017 01:36

And plasters containing silver for new cuts

BewareTheUndertoad · 15/07/2017 02:29

Bio oil is just a marketing ploy to get your money, it has liquid paraffin as a base and a few nice things added in small amounts. I bought it once, thinking it was some great thing, opened it and tried it, thought 'no' so read the ingredients list and binned it.

Just found this which explains it better:

My boyfriend is just like you - gets scars from the slightest injury and seems to take ages to heal.

Maybe increasing your vitamin E intake would help.
