DH puts dummy in his mouth

PinkyPudding · 14/07/2017 19:07

Last month my DH decided that we needed to introduce a dummy to our 6 month old son. DS had been sucking his thumb and I thought that was fine and better than a dummy but I worry about being a "gatekeeper" mom so I didn't put up much resistance to the dummy. However I noticed immediately that DH kept putting the dummy in his mouth first before giving it to DS. Even when the dummy falls out of DS's mouth and lands on the bed or couch, DH puts it in his mouth first then gives it to DS.
This drives me absolutely crazy! I really hate it. I don't understand why he does that. I asked him to stop because it's gross and he said that it's a "normal thing" in this country (I'm American and my DH is British and we live in the UK) and basically told me to get over it.
AIBU? Is this a British parenting thing that I just don't understand?

Some people do it some don't.

I don't see an issue as over 6 month old they put a lot worse things in their mouth.

My daughter ate her own shit

PandaFalls · 14/07/2017 19:09

It's something I've always done Blush I get all the crap off the dummy and give it to DD. She's one now and has only recently ever been poorly!

Justhadmyhaircut · 14/07/2017 19:10

Always done it. . Never done dc any harm.

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 14/07/2017 19:10

But why does he do it? Blergh

phoenixtherabbit · 14/07/2017 19:10

Ah I am guilty of this. Not every time but I do it sometimes. Ds has had worse things in his mouth I'm sure!

BuzzKillington · 14/07/2017 19:12

Yuck. It makes me feel sick when I see parents do this.

Carry spares and wash dummies properly.

sirfredfredgeorge · 14/07/2017 19:12

For the same reasons as there's a compulsion to kiss children on the lips - there was an evolutionary advantage in sharing the bacteria in your mouth with your childs mouth.

If that advantage is still there is a tougher thing to know, but that's the why.

WorraLiberty · 14/07/2017 19:14

I've seen 100s of parents doing this over the years.

As long as he doesn't smoke, doesn't have a cold sore/mouth ulcer, I don't think it matters really.

Mind put far worse things in their mouths than that.

kaytee87 · 14/07/2017 19:15

I always do it, sterilise them all every now and again though.
I'm with you though, seems pointless introducing a dummy at 6 months if he hasn't needed it so far. I keep hoping my ds will start sucking his thumb 😂

kaytee87 · 14/07/2017 19:16

^ this, my almost 1yo eats grass and leaves the minute my backs turned. Also tries to chew my flip flops.

Supersoaryflappypigeon · 14/07/2017 19:17

I do it if I don't have a spare (or if all the spares have been thrown on the floor!) however DD is 16 months - I think at 6 months I was still obsessively sterilising everything.

GummyGoddess · 14/07/2017 19:23

I wouldn't do it, I find it a bit icky. I'm happy to run it under hot water instead of sterilising though.

Dc uses a dummy for naps and I wish he didn't as it's a pain in the bum when he needs to sleep and I don't have one, or he wakes when it comes out. He is happy with it though so I'm leaving it with him for now.

Trb17 · 14/07/2017 19:23

"A little bit of dirt does you good" as I was always told. Good for the immune system and I wouldn't bat an eyelid at dummy sucking by parents.

Upyourdaisy · 14/07/2017 19:27

Haha ProudBadMum I nearly pissed myself.
I'm guilty of this too (putting little ones dummy in my mouth regularly, not eating shit 😁)

ScrunchyBook · 14/07/2017 19:28

I do it to get the fluff off

Sushi123 · 14/07/2017 19:30

I do it all the time...I don't see the problem, however, as it pisses you off, he should stop doing it for your sake. Why piss your DP off when it's easily avoidable?

SummerMummy88 · 14/07/2017 19:31

A mouth has far more germs than a floor, it's disgusting a dummy needs to to be washed or sterilised, did he really need one?

WorraLiberty · 14/07/2017 19:32

my almost 1yo eats grass and leaves the minute my backs turned.

What, you mean they just eat grass and bugger off?

Grin Grin

kaytee87 · 14/07/2017 19:33

Grin worra I swear I can usually spell, I should have an early night.

Supersoaryflappypigeon · 14/07/2017 19:36

WorraGrin
kay I get it - I can't spell when I'm tired either Smile

NotTheDuchessOfCambridge · 14/07/2017 19:39

A dummy is actually an easier habit to brake than thumb sucking so he's right in some way. Nothing wrong with sucking the dummy either, I used to do it to get fluff off.

altiara · 14/07/2017 19:39

kay I thought you had a puppy! This is exactly what my dog does Grin

kaytee87 · 14/07/2017 19:40

I had a dummy til I was 3.5 then sucked my thumb til I was 8 🙈😳

DarklyDreamingDexter · 14/07/2017 19:41

Gross.
