To only use iPhones?

rainbowduck · 14/07/2017 16:33

I am clueless about technology but have invested heavily in buying music from iTunes over the years and am now fairly confident using this system. DH recently bought me an iPod, which I also use for iMessage and FaceTime.

I now need a new phone (lost mine!) and have only ever had iPhones (due to music). I am wondering if it is silly to buy another iPhone when I have an iPod?

If yes, what would you recommend? I use the internet, SMS, Whatsapp and emails mainly.

Personally, I think the cost is worth it.

Each to their own, of course. But I could never cope with an android now; to me it's the Asda smart price version of an iPhone Grin

TheFifthKey · 14/07/2017 17:46

I've tried Android phones and tablets, I've had all sorts of things, and I always feel happiest using an Apple product. Seems like a false economy to buy anything else to me now, but it's a personal choice. I'm certainly not a sheep, I've given the alternatives a chance, I know all the pros and cons, but the pros of the Apple stuff outweighs everything else for me.

Aeroflotgirl · 14/07/2017 17:52

My husband works in the tech industry, and has done for 20 years, especially writing softwear for telephone companies, and he switched to Android a few years ago and never looked back. Cheaper, does the same thing, apps for android getting better.

Composteleana · 14/07/2017 17:52

Same as @TheFifthKey I couldn't imagine switching back now.

Aeroflotgirl · 14/07/2017 17:53

WhatToDo it may be like that for you, but my dh would say otherwise, and he is an expert in his field, the technology is very good on the android.

Aeroflotgirl · 14/07/2017 17:54

I can do on my Android phone, what I do on my I pad, no difference tbh.

WhooooAmI24601 · 14/07/2017 17:55

We're an Apple household. Not really for any other reason than practicality; the DCs have iPads, DH and I have MacBooks, we all have iPhones, apple tvs in each room. I like them; they don't break, don't glitch and the iPad I had when DS1 was little (which is around 7 years old now) still works well enough to chuck in the back of the car on long journeys for the DCs to watch a film on.

OverTheHammer · 14/07/2017 17:58

I'll never use anything other than IPhone. I find any other phone a faff on to use. iPhone is simple.

DH likes to have the latest model whereas I'm not bothered so I usually get his cast offs lol

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 14/07/2017 17:59

Android house here, will never go back to Apple.
Are you concerned about losing all the music you bought if you switched?
I lost hundreds of pounds and won't do that twice. I pay my tenner a month for Spotify and live free from music download worries!

Aeroflotgirl · 14/07/2017 18:00

Dh said there are good Androids and bad, it can vary, he tends to get me the good ones as he knows what to get.

Summerisdone · 14/07/2017 18:12

Before you take up a long and expensive contract (or outright buy an expensive phone) see if you can have a proper play around on an android (maybe a friend's or family members rather than 5-10 minutes in a phone store) or if you can, purchase a cheap older version and try it out for a month before getting a more permanent up to date one.

The Android platform and IOS platform are very different and you say how you're not great or confident with new technology so it will feel like a massive change for you, and a Samsung or Xperia may be a better phone but it's still no good if you can't get used to it after years of handling the IOS platform.

My mum recently bought my nan a new Samsung as that what mum always prefer and thought it would be a better phone, after almost 2 months nan gave up on it and has gone back to using her iPhone because that's what she's used to after 4 years of using it.

Hotpinkangel19 · 14/07/2017 19:17

I'm an apple user, have tried Samsung and I liike the phones, just the constant pop ups and ads drive me crazy 😡

WeAllHaveWings · 14/07/2017 19:19

I had a Motorola Moto G for just 2 years before it started acting up. Callers randomly not hearing me, earphones not working, Bluetooth not connecting. A power off/on would sometimes fix, other times it needed a factory reset. Gave up a year ago and aquired an old iPhone 5s, much better and more reliable/responsive.

WhenWasThat · 14/07/2017 19:35

Q. How can you make a fortune out of sheep?

A. Bring out a new iPhone model every year

I've been Apple only for the last ten years or so but have never found the need to buy a new model every year. I'm not stupid and I don't care about 'status'. I buy Apple because I want to. I'm aware they are expensive but I'm an adult and if I want to spend my money on an Apple phone I shall. 😁 I'm currently using a 30 month old handset and one of the DC is using the iPhone4 I had before that. I find Apple an annoying company but I love how reliable and shines their phones are. I will happily buy a new iPhone when my current one gets old........baa 🐑🐑🐑🐑

rainbowduck · 16/07/2017 19:53

I bought an iPhone.

(Does a happy sheep dance)

👍🏻. Yay! I hope you enjoy it it. 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕

Funnily enough my DH was reading an article in the FT and asked in incredulous tones if I'd spend $1000 on the new iPhone. -

I was holding my iphone6 plus with maxed out memory at the time.... 😬

Pays your money, takes your choice.
Personally have had both in the past, now firmly an iPhone user.
Also never quite get why people are so hung up about the lack of third party apps on iPhone.
But hey, 'tis all subjective.

GeminiRising · 17/07/2017 17:06

I love my iphone. My other half has had samsungs for ages and always struggled, swapped him over to one of my old iphones and he finds it so much easier to use.

And I don't upgrade mine every year either.

Baaaa.

SheSaidHeSaid · 17/07/2017 17:10

I have an iphone for my work phone and a Samsung Galaxy as my personal phone. Much prefer my Samsung and can't imagine going back to an iphone unless they up their game or change things dramatically.

SandyDenny · 17/07/2017 17:12

I know you've bought your phone now and I don't have any strong view, I've never had an iPhone, what is it that they do that you can't do on android? I'd like to know what I'm missing before I decide on my next phone

BeALert · 17/07/2017 17:18

I hated my Android, and I'm pretty technically savvy. Went back to an iPhone with relief.

Now that I design for a living, I have two Macs, and my kids have a Mac each (school provides them) so we're basically an Apple household apart from DH.

No one in our house upgrades their iphone till it's basically dead - most of ours are 2-3 years old.

MidsummerMoo · 17/07/2017 18:28

Pretty much the only thing a new iPhone is going to do that the iPod doesn't is the phone calls/WhatsApp, assuming you use wifi over 3G mostly, But that will be the same with any other phone.

If you are not technically minded and happy with Apple, the only reason I can think of to change is cost- and some of the newest Android phones will set you back, but a really cheap one could do for just calls and messages.

I for one have bought so many IOS apps I'm happy with, I have no desire to switch OS (OH has Android) although am completely aware of the frustration of forced upgrades etc.

MidsummerMoo · 17/07/2017 18:29

Ha ha, bit late to the party, ignore me, but good choice ;-)

LuxCoDespondent · 17/07/2017 18:34

iPhoned, Androided and iPhoned again. It's not a massive challenge to switch between the two, you will be surprised how quickly you get used to it.

In my view, an iPhone only does about 90% of what an Android can, but in general does it slightly better. You know what you get with an iPhone, and they tend to be supported for longer - this is something you may want to consider if you are intending to have the phone for more than a couple of years.
