Vegetarian options in restaurants

CrackersDontMatter · 14/07/2017 12:38

This isn't strictly an aibu, so I know I am being unreasonable to ask here but I know that the vegetarian options on menus are often unimaginative and disappointing (mushroom risotto, goats cheese tart anyone?) Can I ask what any vegetarians out there like to see as an option and perhaps what has been your favourite vegetarian meal in a restaurant, particularly in high end places? I've had a few friends and my SIL go vegetarian over the past year and I'd just like a better idea to help me choose a venue for a big celebratory meal later this year. None of the veggies are local to me so I can't really ask them for a recommendation!

Indian restaurants are usually good. Buffets are even better. Mexicans can be good because they often do a veg version of most things on the menu.

SnickersWasAHorse · 14/07/2017 18:39

I don't think you know how statistics work. Why would you have been asked?

Well I'm not saying that they will phone me up and say 'hey Snickers are you a vegi?' But what I am saying is that like exit polls I don't see how it can be a true representation. I, nor anyone I have ever asked, has taken part in any of these polls except for the census.

toosexyforyahshirt · 14/07/2017 18:41

But it is a true representation, because statistics. How many people have you ever asked if they have ever been questioned about anything?

AssassinatedBeauty · 14/07/2017 18:49

It's a true representation of the data that was gathered in that particular survey. Of course you can analyse and criticise the methodology of how the data was collected, the sample size etc etc. That might give you cause to doubt the usefulness of the results.

That 2% figure does seem to be from 5 years or so ago, and I do think things have changed quite a lot in that time.

lifeisazebracrossing · 14/07/2017 18:55

Las Iguanas have a separate veggie/vegan menu and the burritos/beetroot bean burger (freshly made) are lovely 👍🏻

Okite · 14/07/2017 19:02

Indian restaurants are usually good. our local Indian when we lived in Bristol used to do a vegetable curry which was basically a bag of frozen veg in whatever sauce you'd ordered. Including sprouts.

DailyMailReadersAreThick · 14/07/2017 19:38

Sprout curry is lovely!

DailyMailReadersAreThick · 14/07/2017 19:38

...maybe not frozen, though...

SouthWestmom · 14/07/2017 19:40

I ❤️ fajitas or enchiladas for vegetarians.

Also , veggie burgers and chips

Also - no risoto, goats cheese or halloumi

heyduggeeallday · 14/07/2017 19:41

I've just had to have fish as all the halloumi was gone and the only food left for veggies was hot and spicy which I hate!! I feel guilty now ☹

Groupie123 · 14/07/2017 19:50

Wahaca's street food section.(Mexican)
Itsu

But the most imaginative vegetarian Indian food comes from Leicester. Just can't get excellent Indian veggie food elsewhere in my opinion (it's mostly East African-Indian fusion which tastes far better in my opinion than stuff from India which uses more sugar).

EastMidsMummy · 14/07/2017 19:53

That 2% figure does seem to be from 5 years or so ago, and I do think things have changed quite a lot in that time.

Why?

Ginlovinglady · 14/07/2017 19:56

Anyone who eats fish is not a vegetarian
Fact
Also, standard food in a crap pub is just as bad for meat eaters, there isn't choice it's the same shit frozen and reheated
If I went to any decent restaurant I wouldn't hesitate to primarily eat vege even though I'm not a vegetarian, good food is good food.
Shit restaurants are shit restaurants
Stop going to them

AssassinatedBeauty · 14/07/2017 20:10

Because, East, as a vegetarian I notice more vegetarians around me than I used to. There are other vegetarian children at my children's nursery/school than there used to be. Vegetarian/vegan food is more available than it used to be, presumably driven by demand. It's only my perception, I could be completely wrong.

ThymeLord · 14/07/2017 20:38

Unfortunately Gin some of us are on tight budgets and can't afford to go to naice places! I still deserve a reasonable choice of shit ping food.

Rainbunny · 14/07/2017 20:42

I love Tex-Mex food and many restaurants will offer portobello mushrooms or happily substitute mushrooms for meat in fajitas, yum!

AtleastitsnotMonday · 14/07/2017 20:58

I'm not veggie but eat very little meat. I'm careful about what I eat and am not keen on cheese. I would like to have a veggie option when eating out but the veggie option just tends to be really unhealthy, cheese laden or with greasy puff pastry.

Meatbadger · 14/07/2017 21:06

Bloody mushroom risotto!!! I'm so so sick of it. I'm happy with there being only one or two vegetarian options but it's nice when the chef has put some thought into it and made something you wouldn't get everywhere.
Also good restaurants will make you something if you don't like the vegetarian option on the menu.

exexpat · 14/07/2017 21:21

I wish all the chefs at expensive restaurants and gastro-pubs, who think that goat's cheese tartlets or butternut squash risotto are great vegetarian options, could be forced to go and eat somewhere like Vanilla Black (London), Maitreya Social (Bristol) or David Bann (Edinburgh) to see what interesting, delicious, creative vegetarian food actually looks and tastes like.

My local Michelin-starred restaurant actually does a full vegetable tasting menu once a week, and caters well for vegetarians all the time, so it can be done.

Elllicam · 14/07/2017 21:49

I find the higher end restaurants are actually worse. I had a special occasion last year and was looking for a really special vegetarian meal. I checked about 15 of the most expensive restaurants near Glasgow and every single one at the time was serving risotto as their vegetarian option. Mostly butternut squash or mushroom. I'm sorry I'm not paying that kind of money for gloopy rice :(

Ginlovinglady · 14/07/2017 22:41

I didn't say that people didn't deserve nice food
I can go to a standard pub and pay 8-12 for a shit burger
Tell me somewhere that you can get decent really cheap food. I don't think you can
I don't think you can get out of a place without paying 15 for anything
I don't mean pay 100s
All I am pointing out is that chain pubs/restaurants are rubbish for everyone
Best you could do is Indian
So I'm just pointing out. Shit food is shit food
Fuck all to do with money
You could go to a chef n brewer and spend £30-40 per head and it will be shit

Ginlovinglady · 14/07/2017 22:42

It's fuck all to do with being vegetarian is all I am pointing out!

Thissameearth · 14/07/2017 22:49

Tend to go for places were veggie dishes are part of normal fare to be eaten by all so: Turkish, Italian, middle eastern, Indian. Pret is good for lunches. Never really enjoy veggie only places: it seems to mean sloppy meals of a type I identify with old student cookbooks or self conscious overpriced "lifestyle" places.

oldiebutgoodie · 14/07/2017 22:49

Oh I feel your pain. Dh and I have just returned from a fortnight in Cornwall and the area where we struggled was lunches. Nice day out, fancy a sandwich and it's cheese. Cheese and pickle, cheese and onion, cheese and grape, cheese and tomato, various cheeses, various accompanying bits. I love cheese as much as the next person but for the love of God, give me a break!

You've said that you're near Manchester, if you're ever in Wigan ( yes, Wigan) check out The Coven. Tiny but excellent vegetarian restaurant which is bring your own drink with no corkage.

Ra1nSunRain · 14/07/2017 23:48

Indian best for veggie food also Thai food
