Fed up :( Scaphoid fracture from saving a baby, holiday in 2 weeks

Yesterday I had a horrible, almost car accident. I'll Cp the message I sent to DH as I can't bring myself to type it all again.

Anyway before I go, I have had a bit of an accident today with the car, and i think i might need to get my arm looked at tomorrow. I was driving up te hill from the train station in XXXX earlier, and a woman started screaming. When I looked she had somehow let go of her pram and it was in the road coming straight towards the car. I slammed on, and because the windows were open i stuck my arm out as i opened the car door and managed to stop it, but it did tip up. The baby was ok, but i think i have done some damage to myself.

Anyway. Been to minor injuries this morning and I have, indeed, fractured my scaphoid.

We go to Cyprus in 2 weeks. First summer holiday for 10 years. We have had an utterly shit time recently, and this was our "oh my god we get a break" moment.

Now I can't swim, look a twat with the brace on (they've agreed to a brace so I can fly, rather than a cast).

I'm utterly fucked off, and feeling very 'woe-is-me"

And I'm self employed so can't even work out any time off. And it bloody hurts.

The mon ther was on her phone and must have let go to type one thing. But it's a steep hill, and the brakes mustn't have locked on properly.

Can't you claim on your travel insurance?

Pinkkahori · 14/07/2017 11:27

No advice but well done you!!! You must have amazing reflexes. You saved a baby.

mogulfield · 14/07/2017 11:29

Well done for saving the baby. You can still paddle and take a dip in the pool keeping your arm out? Not ideal but try and enjoy the bits you can?

BallOrAerosol · 14/07/2017 11:31

You saved a baby. Keep holding onto that thought, you did an amazing thing. You and the baby are both still here, both OK, your injuries will hopefully heal quickly and your life will get easier. Just take it easy and be kind to yourself. Enjoy your holiday!

eeniemeenieminiemoe2014 · 14/07/2017 11:32

just imagine how much worse you would.have felt if you hadnt caught the baby and they had been hurt. it sucks but its the lesser of two evils

cardibach · 14/07/2017 11:33

If it's a brace rather than a plaster, can you go in the pool anyway? I mean, you can't slog lengths, but I wouldn't do that on holiday anyway! You did an amazing thing. Hope your holiday is fab.

provider5sectorzz9 · 14/07/2017 11:34

Bloody hell, you deserve a 🏅

BarbarianMum · 14/07/2017 11:35

Flowers Poor you, that's really crap.

I dropped my work keys, car keys and purse over a cliff last month in the process of stopping someone else's toddler going over and was surprisingly upset about it even though i had, in fact, saved a life. It just seemed wrong to be "punished" for doing a good deed (childish i know). Obviously if i hadn't manage to grab him I'd not even have noticed their loss in the horror of what followed which makes my reaction even more unreasonable.

StaplesCorner · 14/07/2017 11:35

another vote for holiday insurance - go when you are all healed up. And well done xx

Ilove · 14/07/2017 11:42

Yes could claim on insurance, but there is literally no other time we can go. We're going with two sets of friends, DH's work doesn't allow holidays - he gets told when his sets of 10 off are, and this is the ONLY set in the 12 months in the school holidays. DS18 starts uni in September, so his last family holiday. REnting a villa from a friend so it was a lot cheaper.

I'm a nanny so have 5 families, all of whom are off at the same time as me.

We'll go. It's just like a previous poster said, pissed off at being punished for doing good.

Oh poor you, but well done saving the baby.

StaplesCorner · 14/07/2017 11:51

Its a shame but try not to look at it like that, you changed lots of lives by saving that baby, in fact you, the baby maybe even other people could have suffered a lot worse injuries if you hadn't acted exactly as you did. Unfortunately goodness is its own reward!

Andtheresaw · 14/07/2017 12:00

Oh poor you: scaphoid breaks are notoriously painful!
The good news though is that as long as the bones stay in position (ie you keep your brace on and don't grab another speeding pram) it will knot quickly and by the time to go on holiday it will be an inconvenience but not agony.
You can bob in the water but don't swim properly or do anything to pull the break apart.
As you will only have one hand free to hold your glass, someone else will need to carry your bags, make your bed and do all the cooking and cleaning. This is an enforced rest for you.
You said you needed a break: this just isn't the kind you expected !

ImListening · 14/07/2017 12:03

Well done you. I'm going to try & pm you as what I have to tell you is very outing

mylaptopismylapdog · 14/07/2017 12:06

You are a heroine, you saved a life Well Done.! You are probably still absorbing the shock so I would give yourself a bit of time to see how you feel. I usually feel worse about everything before a holiday and I think it is because I let myself feel the build up of tiredness, check your insurance and maybe wait a day or so before making any decision if you can.

confusedat23 · 14/07/2017 12:09

Hey OP...

Firstly well done for saving the baby!

Secondly, Scaffoids are actually a very quick bone to heal provided you have not broken it the whole way through! (although they would have told you this as you will need a Bone graft!). I have broken mine in the same wrist twice so I know how painful it is to start!

If you stick to following the rules exactly for the next 2 weeks I would not worry about having the brace on whilst swimming or sunbathing... you really will not NEED it at that point it will only be if you are lifting/carrying or doing actual manual stuff with your thumb.

I hope you have a lovely holiday, you sound like you deserve it!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 14/07/2017 12:09

Am I allowed to roll my eyes at the mother who was on her phone rather than actually watching her child???

FUCK I feel for you. I really, really do. All I can suggest is that you make a long list of everything you can do that you want to do and make sure that you do it. Flowers.

ImListening · 14/07/2017 12:10

I've managed to pm you so please take heart from my scaphoid story which if I wrote on here all my friends & family would know me immediately!!

Northend77 · 14/07/2017 12:13

I was going to say well done for saving the baby but now I think it's a well done for managing to sort out dates when you can all go on holiday with that lot to juggle!! What a headache!! Can you take the brace off temporarily so that you can submerge in the pool (not actually swim as I guess that will hurt) and just keep on top of some good painkillers?

I really hope you have a good holiday, sounds like you need it and have moved heaven and earth to get away!

Germgirl · 14/07/2017 12:25

I broke my scaphoid ages ago. I remember how much it hurt, you poor thing.
I bought a cast cover called a Limbo, it looked a bit daft but did allow me to have a shower / bath.
Is the brace one of those Velcro things? You can probably get that wet anyway can't you? You'll have some weird tan lines admittedly but apart from that you should be ok. You've done an amazing thing saving the baby, it's just a shame you've been 'rewarded' like this!

Sashkin · 14/07/2017 12:35

Well done you!

Letting go of the pram on a steep hill has always been my absolute nightmare (we live near some very long steep hills). It's so easily done. I use a wrist strap for this very reason, and I really do think they should come with buggies as standard.

WomblingThree · 14/07/2017 13:15

I've broken my scaphoid 4 (possibly 5?) times, and you have my sympathy; it hurts like a bitch. Like others have said though, it starts to heal and feel better much quicker than some other breaks. I can almost promise you won't believe how much better it feels by the time you go on holiday.

The first twice, I had a full on massive cast, after that I had a brace like it sounds yours is. I didn't worry too much about getting it wet (although if it's got the metal supports it might go rusty I suppose) and I did take it off and wash and moisturise under it sometimes. That's probably a big no-no and I'm not recommending it of course Wink.

Well done though, your reflexes must be bloody brilliant! Grin

Ilove · 14/07/2017 13:48

Thankyou all. Yes at the moment it is a Velcro thing with two metal plates in it. I have apparently to treat it as though it is a pot and be careful.

Thankyou for the PM too...I'll go hunt it out!

Not that this should stop you from milking it for all it's worth OP ... :) :)

K425 · 14/07/2017 16:13

If you're desperate, you can get waterproof protectors for casts. Possibly not the most stylish of pool wear, but you'd get to swim. Also, I saw a kid in the sea in Spain last summer with one, having a whale of a time!
