Blocking sites via internet controls without dp's knowledge

Not sure it's quite AIBU, but not quite relationship either.

I've just tried to look at a adult site I saw mentioned on a different thread on here, just out of curiosity as I don't know what it is! I can't access the site as it says it's blocked by sky broadband shield, which controls what you can view (or something like that!).

I presume my bf set it up as he set up the sky package and it's not a big deal if he did. But would you expect to be told? And is it a bit odd in the first place? We have a dd but she's only a baby, so it's not so she can't view anything.

It also won't let me accses dating sites but it will betting sites so it's not a ban on everything 18+

I just feel a bit Hmm I've never had parental controls on me, even when I was a child!! Not that I'm wanting to view those types of sites or anything.

Or could it be that sky set it automatically and you have to unblock? No experience of setting up sky myself.

I know there was something in the news a wee while ago that settings were set to that and you had to change them manually. I'm not sure about Sky, we have Virgin and had to manually remove the adult channels from the TV boxes and request firewalls for parental controls (kids are older).
Surely the fact porn and dating sites are blocked is a good thing?

kaytee87 · 14/07/2017 08:26

A lot of internet providers block them automatically.

chipsandpeas · 14/07/2017 08:27

Sky has prob done it and you need to call them to remove the block

StickThatInYourPipe · 14/07/2017 08:28

Deffo been blocked by the company probably just hasn't been noticed before.

Okite · 14/07/2017 08:29

I set up all our internet/parental controls. It blocks a wide range of sites automatically (e.g, DH likes to go on gaming forums and they were initially blocked, he had to ask me to put them on the permitted list!). I would think literally nothing of it, it's sensible to have parental controls set up at the time you set everything up with a child in the house so you don't forget to do it later.

StickThatInYourPipe · 14/07/2017 08:30

On the plus side, it shows your dp hasn't been looking at porn if this hasn't been picked up before Grin

Abstardust · 14/07/2017 08:31

I had sites not blocked since we had sky then suddenly last month they were blocked with sky shield, I have access to controls so assume sky is now making it default and you have to change manually.

worridmum · 14/07/2017 08:32

Sky auto blocks things now we have to ring up to unblock / access to the block list as it blocked none porn sites which was annoying

Ameliablue · 14/07/2017 09:09

It will probably have been a standard check box when he set it up that he did without a thought. Perfectly normal.

I had to get my BF to change the parental settings on his account because it would stop me looking at certain news articles if it mentioned bad things too many times Grin. Yet as a tester we tried some other sites we assumed would be blocked and they weren't.

Sometimes the filters are just weird.

Emboo19 · 14/07/2017 09:24

Thanks everyone!

I don't mind it being blocked, only thought it odd that he'd intentionally block it without telling me. But as most say it's probably automatically blocked and he's just unblocked gambling and I'm guessing gaming as he sometimes plays online.

Ha, I know he doesn't watch porn anyway StickThat but yes I'm probably the only woman on mumsnet asking why he's blocked porn and dating sites!!

You don't have to ring sky, you can do it online

misscarlar · 14/07/2017 09:38

Sky block loads of stuff automatically, you can log in online and change it

Joey7t8 · 14/07/2017 09:49

'I've just tried to look at a adult site I saw mentioned on a different thread on here, just out of curiosity as I don't know what it is!'

We believe you Wink

As others said, it'll probably be a default setting and not your husband trying to control your masturbatorial activities.

indigox · 14/07/2017 09:52

Sky autoblocks various sites.

Littlefrogletx · 14/07/2017 09:53

It's automatic, but I think the standard sky shield has a watershed.
So certain sites can be accessed after 9/10pm even with the broadband shield on.

VladmirsPoutine · 14/07/2017 09:56

Heartoverheadhouse Yes Grin. The account holder, or anyone that knows the password would have to contact Sky.

Emboo19 · 14/07/2017 11:59

Ha, Joey genuine curiosity I promise Blush. But I did wonder how I mention it to my boyfriend, especially seen as he's working away at the moment. I'm not sure saying 'the Internet won't let me view porn or join tinder' would be a good idea Grin
