About male maintenance workers in the office loos?

Really need a general view on this because I have no idea if I'm being unreasonable or not, before I complain to real people about it!

My office is in a building with lots of other office. Bathrooms are on each floor and between floors. They all have people in and out but are rarely busy.

Often when maintenance work needs doing, the make maintenance workers will just come in and start doing stuff, even if people are going to the loo. I was in their just now and heard one come in, talking on the walkie talkie. Didn't announce himself, didn't ask if he was alright to come in. This happens a lot.

I feel that male workers should check before coming into female loos, and should wait until women aren't going to the toilet before working. I feel a bit weird going to the loo with a strange man right there. I thought about saying something to the building management but I feel a bit silly.
But I've no idea why I feel this way, or even really what the problem is with it. Just feels a bit rude.

I'm the least prudy person ever, so not sure why this grates me. What would you think?

It wouldn't overly bother me, however at our offices, they knock, put a sign on the door that it's closed for cleaning/maintenance and then wait for everyone to leave, and go in.

I suspect that is what should happen.

Gosh that's a lot of typos! quick typing while at work.
Male* not make
There* not their

No, YANBU.

Wherever I've worked, signs have been up saying male cleaners/maintenance/janitors in attendance, but they've always left and waited outside if anyone has gone in to use the bathroom.

Aquamarine1029 · 13/07/2017 15:49

Male maintenance workers should ALWAYS knock before entering a women's restroom and wait for anyone using it to exit. The same would apply to a female worker needing access to the men's room. This is just basic common sense and courtesy. YANBU.

JacquesHammer · 13/07/2017 15:51

It wouldn't bother me but there should be a sign that states there may be male maintenance workers in there.

BloodWorries · 13/07/2017 16:02

I thought a sign was the politically correct thing to do, along with knocking and allowing the women in there to finish and leave before starting work/entering. But not sure it would bother me that much.

TheLionQueen1 · 13/07/2017 16:05

I would have no problem with maintenance workers coming in as long as they announced them self and put a sign up. Wouldn't expect them to wait until empty as that's a waste of time for the job they have to do. I manage cleaners and they are regularly having to enter toilets for the opposite sex but would do the above

StickThatInYourPipe · 13/07/2017 16:06

They always knock at our place (unless the lights are off lol) and wait for the person in there to leave then put a sign up outside the door. I would raise this with my manager

skyzumarubble · 13/07/2017 16:07

We have male and female cleaners cleaning male and female loos. They knock before going into opposite sex Ines and stick a sign on the door saying cleaning in progress by male or female attendant.

Andrewofgg · 13/07/2017 16:08

In my office a male maintenance worker asks a woman to make sure the loo is empty - then puts up a sign.

And vice versa of course.

I assumed that that happened everywhere.

Gizlotsmum · 13/07/2017 16:11

Always been accompanied by a knock when I have been in the toilet and a male member of staff has needed access. However they also knocked on the men's too

msrisotto · 13/07/2017 16:11

It would bother me op! Most people in their position ask a passing female to check if it's empty, stick a sign up and then go about their work.

eyebrowsonfleek · 13/07/2017 17:35

I'd expect maintenance workers to announce themselves when they enter a loo. People have their pants down and may be a little daydreams so a sudden drilling or hammering sound could freak them out.

VestalVirgin · 13/07/2017 18:33

Yes. They ought to make sure there's no one in there, and/or she doesn't mind.

I don't have much of a problem with males in the women's loos as long as they know how to behave.

Which means only entering with a damn good reason, and knock and/or ask for permission.

ConstanceCraving · 13/07/2017 18:40

I think they should at least knock out of courtesy.

LuxCoDespondent · 13/07/2017 18:47

The maintenance workers need to do their job, it isn't always convenient to hang around outside counting the number of people who go in and out.

As long as they're not doing anything to invade the privacy of someone in the cubicle (like changing the light, up a step-ladder...) then I don't have any problem with it.

The way around this is just to put a sign up along the lines of "This toilet is cleaned and maintained by persons of both genders" - women then know that they may come across a male in there, so it is their choice as to whether to use the facilities or not. You see these signs near the entrance to public toilets all the time - where people are perhaps more concerned with someone of the "wrong" gender entering their facility - so I don't see any reason why a workspace can't have one.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 13/07/2017 19:07

Maybe they identify as female Wink
