Dumb question time. Can I order from Amazon Uk and have item delivered to ROI? And random question re hockey sticks?

I can't seem to go to the delivery options without going through the payment process first (I'm quite new to online shopping as I'm ancient).

Also, does a hockey stick need to be measured to the height of the player?

I order stuff from Amazon UK and get it delivered to where I live in mainland Europe, it just costs a few quid for delivery.

I know what you mean re having to put in payment info first before seeing delivery costs, it's annoying, but you still have to confirm order on the next screen after that, where you do see the delivery charge.

No idea re hockey sticks!

Chasingsquirrels · 13/07/2017 13:00

Hockey stick - yes. It needs to come to a certain part of you. Ds2 knows but isn't here to ask.

iogo · 13/07/2017 13:01

Yes to the Hockey sticks. It should come to the top of the player's waist. About mid way between the hip and bottom rib.

user1496484020 · 13/07/2017 13:02

Thanks. Might be best sending the cash then and letting her pick one out herself. Bloody expensive yokes too! Aw, secondary school is an expensive business.

OP posts:
AlexanderHamilton · 13/07/2017 13:03

Yes, hockey sticks need to be a certain size. And some players like heavier or lighter sticks.

Game0fScones · 13/07/2017 13:05

Use Parcel Motel? You can get a NI addrss so get free UK postage. Then it is delivered to your nearest Parcel Motel pick up point.

user1496484020 · 13/07/2017 13:07

It will be for a beginner at hockey at a school where hockey is pretty much compulsory I think. Not a particularly sporty child so not looking for high end, but don't want to put her at an immediate disadvantage by buying her a brick to play with either.
I think she's going to have to go in herself and ask for a bit of expertise in shop.
I can abandon my amazon craze for today. :)

Doubt there is a parcel motel in deepest darkest rural Ireland. Will look into that in future though if I need to. I usually get things delivered here and post over. Probably most expensive way of doing things!

Also need to buy her a wetsuit. Anyone have a ballpark figure for mid-price-range of a hockey stick and wetsuit for a 13 year old girl (average height), so I know how much to send over?

OP posts:
BoneStripped · 13/07/2017 13:14

It all depends on the seller as to whether they'll ship to the ROI - I've had many a thing delivered to the middle of nowhere, Mayo, but have also found some items that they won't send. If you go ahead and place the order, it'll tell you if it can't be shipped to your address :)

WhatchaMaCalllit · 13/07/2017 13:15

If you're in Ireland, check out Heatons and SportsWorld (think that's the name of the sports shop associated with Heatons) for wet suit.
Dunnes Stores also do wetsuits.

Here is a link to the 'Locations' page on the Parcel Motel page - www.parcelmotel.com/locations/

Thanks.

If anyone has a random 13 year old average height child going handy, would you mind measuring up to their waist/between ribs and waist for me? Can't get through to my own one as she is gallivanting with no signal in outer mongolia.

Found this one

Found this stick, but don't know if it's too high/tall for her?

OP posts:
Whitelisbon · 13/07/2017 13:54

Just measured my 14 yo dd (who is slightly smaller than most of her friends), and she's 102cm from top of waist yo the floor. Hth

FuckYouLinda · 13/07/2017 13:59

Also try parcel wizard.

They deliver to a NI address then DPD courier it to your own address. It's brilliant and I don't use anything else now.

user1496484020 · 13/07/2017 13:59

That converts to 40 inches, so looks like the 36.5 inches one would be perfect for her.
My sister, who I've managed to just contact has a 'funky' (God only knows what that means in my sister's terms) fibreglass one she can pass on
What's the difference between fibreglass and Nanocarb aerolite does anyone know?

Whitelisbon Thank you to you and your dd for measuring for me. I'm sure your dd was bemused! Why Mammy? Cos we're helping a randomer on the internet dear lol.

But do you need an address in NI? Cos I don't know any? If you use a generic address for parcel wizard etc., what is it and how do they know where the end address is?

OP posts:
WhatchaMaCalllit · 13/07/2017 14:14

No, they supply you with a 'shadow' address in NI - as in they have their depot in NI and you become like a post office box number in that depot. Then they transfer the parcel to you at your actual address in RoI but it's all done by them. You don't need to have an actual physical address in NI.

minisoksmakehardwork · 13/07/2017 14:22

Possibly difference in weight on hockey sticks. I was always told go longer than shorter if needed, and dd1(9) did get on better with a slightly longer stick than one to suit her height. Bear in mind a growth spurt and you will have to buy another one if it ends up too short.

user1496484020 · 13/07/2017 14:27

Well she can use my sister's one if she outgrows this one. Ordered now. AAAAAAAAAArrrrrghhhh. Bloody hell. The expense of secondary school!

OP posts:
AlexanderHamilton · 13/07/2017 14:32

Fibreglass is cheap & cheerful. its sometimes combined with wood to limit wear & tear to a stick.

Carbon is expensive producing stiff strong sticks which means powerbut it can be brittle so it's often combined with other materials

theymademejoin · 13/07/2017 15:23

Addresspal is cheaper than ParcelMotel and you collect at your local post office. They do the US too.

AddressPal takes a bit linger to set up though as they send you out a card in the post.

mikeyssister · 13/07/2017 15:30

Elverys are really good for wet suits and hockey sticks at a good price. Try also Sports Direct.

Astella22 · 13/07/2017 15:50

An post do an service called 'Address Pal' they give u a London address to get things delivered to and you then pick it up in your local post office a few days later. Normal delivery is free to the uk usually and address pal is cheaper then listing your Irish address, I use it all the time and find it great.

user1496484020 · 13/07/2017 15:56

How does it work though on amazon? What address do I give?

OP posts:
TaggySits · 13/07/2017 16:08

36.5" is quite a long stick (I play hockey with a 36" and I'm 5'7"). If she's only 13 she's unlikely to need quite so long a stick unless she is very tall. Is it too late to change your order?
