To ask colleague to stop smoking

Would I be unreasonable to ask a colleague to put out a cigarette while travelling in their car to an external meeting during work hours?
They lit up without asking if it's ok with me, which I always assumed was common courtesy when in the car with someone else. (I am also 8 weeks pregnant but this is unknown to them obviously)

You drive.
And I suppose since it's company policy, you can ask them not to smoke.

I don't see why people would do it with an adult non-smoker but wouldn't do it with a child in the car? The effects are the same

Adults have the choice of who to travel with, kids don't.

When I smoked, if I was giving someone a lift to a meeting or a cafe at lunch I'd pre-warn them - you're welcome to come with me but I'm going to have a cigarette on the way. Then they can choose whether to get in or find their own way.

t is a grey area as to whether I am within my rights to ask them not to smoke

It's not really though...you are of course allowed to ask them not to smoke. If it's their car, they're also allowed to refuse and smoke if they want.

You will have to offer to drive in future.
Your colleague won't light up in your car.

Green

Fair enough, I used to smoke too... Tbf I'm the sort of person who asks the passenger if it's OK for me to smoke in my own car Hmm

MagicMoneyTree · 12/07/2017 19:05

If it's company policy that you travel together then I'd say it's classes as work and you're entitled to ask colleague not to smoke. I bet you reek of it after being in the car with him for an hour!

ConstanceCraving · 12/07/2017 19:05

I think it's pretty selfish smoking in your car when you have a non smoking passenger tbh. I know he can smoke if he chooses to but it's wrong imo.

Could you tell him you're pregnant and that you're feeling sick?

happypoobum · 12/07/2017 19:07

I would just tell my boss that I couldn't share with X any longer as they smoke and it makes you feel sick, so can she agree that you can drive separately and she/he will pay you mileage.

If they say no, I would consider raising a grievance.

mude · 12/07/2017 19:22

I would happily drive each time but being a passenger is a good use of time to get my laptop out and get some work done car sickness/morning sickness permitted. Also, the mileage pay is rather favourable so people are more than willing to offer to drive so they can make some extra cash back. If I insisted on driving each time they might think I was taking advantage! I think I will politely request no smoking prior to the next journey. If colleague refuses I will drive myself and talk to HR about the policy needing to be reviewed ! Thank you all for your help
