Why do people say Pacific instead of specific? Confused

Effect and Affect

Surely it can't be that hard to use the right one? Particularly in advertising!

My best friend says Pacific instead of specific. I've never mentioned it to her though.

Andtheresaw · 12/07/2017 14:30

Invite instead of invitation.
Of instead of have.

Petalbird · 12/07/2017 14:31

I can't say specific Sad

LoneCrone · 12/07/2017 14:32

Why not, Petal? Which bit gets you?

nornironrock · 12/07/2017 14:32

Liaison instead of liaise.

FreakinDeacon · 12/07/2017 14:32

I agree that in formal/public writing it should be possible for it to be correct.

However, without meaning to sound all righteous and smug, I don't really understand the angst on MN and on social media in general about poor use of languge.

My take is that, if it is clear what is meant, why does it matter if they get the wrong spelling or slightly wrong word? The English language is bloody complex and not everyone is taught some of these things.

This is an interesting article written by a Lexicographer (Have I spelt that right? oh the irony!).

I am no trying to be antagonistic, but there are threads almost weekly about this kind of thing and I just can't see that its worth getting worked up about.

Then instead of than.
I'd rather have a KFC 'then' a Pizza Hut ... yeah me too love but 2 take aways in one day is frowned upon.

Throgglesprocket · 12/07/2017 15:09

I'm not too bothered about it really in verbal language, but it's when it's written down it really grates.

I think I was just dragged up proper-like!

I think people should use the correct word. Grin

miniloco · 12/07/2017 15:14

Because no matter how many times I read about when to use affect/effect I still can't embed it in my brain. I have a mental block. I do find my eyes hurting from rolling to the very bsck of my head when I read such judgement about incorrect spelling/grammar as if it somehow makes you better? That I don't get

HMC2000 · 12/07/2017 15:20

Quote instead of quotation

corythatwas · 12/07/2017 15:22

exactly

people saying "adder" when they mean "nadder" or "nickname" when they mean "ekename", just shows off their ignorance

grandOlejukeofYork · 12/07/2017 15:24

brought when they mean bought. That one is everywhere!

ChrisPrattsFace · 12/07/2017 15:25

kashleesi two in one day is frowned upon? Shit. I better calm down down Grin

GreenTulips · 12/07/2017 15:27
