To let my DC listen to the news?

I often have the radio news on when I am in the house with the DC (Radio 4, so Today, WATO, PM etc). Oldest is just turned 3 and until now I have not worried that he is listening or understanding what is being said, but I think he is just beginning to pick up on things.

I wouldn't have the TV news on because of potential distressing images, but am I going to have to stop listening on the radio too? Or is it OK to carry on?

I wouldn't my eldest (8 ) watches newsrooms but would turn off radio news.

I can remember being scared as a kid of fires after seeing a fire on tv .

All of mine have listened to radio news and watched TV news forever. There was no point when I considered turning it off.

DS (7) and DD (5) both watch the 6pm news if we're home in time. It's before the watershed therefore I have no issues with it. Sad things happen in the world and I don't feel the need to shield them from that, they are both very well informed on current affairs as a result. I do have to explain things to them of course, which I do in an age appropriate way.

I listen to the radio in the car..I do turn it down if I think there is something unsuitable.

My dc have always listened to the news on the radio and watched it in the morning.
The only time I have ever turned the radio off is when Radio1 were doing a feature on what young women did if they couldn't afford sanitary towels or tampons, I really was too tired and hungry to have the "Why is the lady on the radio putting socks in her pants conversation" so I turned it off.
Otherwise we have a child friendly conversation about it all, I always try to remind them that the bad things are unusual which is why they're on the news and we have a chat about all the good things that happen.
It works for us, just do what feels right for you.

Mine have grown up with R4 on in the background - Today and PM most days, DCs are teens now.

Probably less than 5 times in over ten years have I reached for the radio to turn it off due to a disturbing or what I considered unsuitable news item. More often something on the news has led to a discussion and when the DCs were young, I felt the news gave them an opportunity to learn about the world in a measured, controlled way.
