To ask is this normal with chicken pox? Traffic post!

Posting for traffic, sorry.

Think DS (aged 4) has chicken pox.
Saturday had diarrhoea, about 5pm projectile vomited everywhere. The next morning some spots appeared, maybe a handful. By yesterday evening he was Perkier but really sleepy. Approx 20-30 spots now I would say, but small raised bumps, no pus filling them?!

This morning he's woken up, complaining of tummy ache, really high fever, gave calpol and piriton and a drink, which he promptly threw up until there was nothing left. He's gone back to sleep now.

I'm really worried in this heat if I can't bring his temp down and he's struggling to drink? Is this chicken pox and just wait it out? Or doctors? 111 (tried last night - just read me the nhs web page on chicken pox after waiting 3 hours for a call back!)

Don't panic, op. See a doc. Now you know that cp can be more than the jolly and a bit itchy stuff that people giggle about.

Hi OP, I know its really frightening when your child is so ill.

My 2 ds had chickenpox when they were really young 2 yrs and 6 months respectively. Youngest had spots and was happily crawling around as normal throughout and didn't seem bothered by the spots. Eldest was very ill with it. Extreme projectile vomit, extremely high temperature etc. The GP initially told me that it was mollescum (? an infectious condition that lasts about 2 years - great , just before starting pre-school), then it got worse - his temperature hit the roof and he was so plastered in spots from head to toe there weren't any gaps even on his eyelids, and when he started being violently sick with it, they weren't so sure what they were looking at and I had to take him up to the hospital to get it diagnosed.

If you haven't had the GP diagnose it I would phone the surgery - it will put your mind at rest that you know definitely what you are dealing with. They will probably say don't bring him in because of the risk of infecting others. Call them and say you aren't sure its CP and explain what is happening with the temperature and get some advice. Perhaps they will be happy to take a look at those piccies you've posted.

For the temperature, if it was me, I would be giving him cool baths and keep him drinking. If he's being really sick, the GP should be giving you something like Dioralyte to help replace the salts and body fluids he's losing. Calamine lotion works well for relief for the spots, but whatever happens try and stop him from scratching them - it took years for me to lose the scars when I had CP as a teenager.

Good luck OP and my sympathies with you and your son, hope it passes soon.

My little one has just had chicken pox, it's hard work but you can get through it. The spots don't fill with liquid immediately. Some of her first spots were behind her ears. My DD's temp went right up to 40 so I would advise you get a thermometer. If he's sicking up the Calpol I think you can just keep rubbing a little bit at a time round his gums, rather than the whole syringe full in one go (hope that makes sense). Cool baths are good for easing the spots, we were having 3 a day. Sorry for the clipped comments, I'm late for school.

Thank you everyone. He's managed to get out of bed now and is on the sofa watching Dino trucks so think he's a little better.
Have a doctors appointment at 10.15

I'm sorry your son has so poorly.
Just a word of caution: don't use ibuprofen to try and bring his temperature down if you're concerned about chicken pox.
Hope he's feeling better soon.

Sounds like CP.

Mine were all really sick with CP - high temp, vomiting, etc . All the other kids who had it at the same time seemed to get mild doses. I think some people just seem to get it worse than others.

strikealight · 10/07/2017 12:52

Piriton syrup helped my dd a lot and my dh (who was suffering much more severe symptoms) a bit.

IamDBCooper · 10/07/2017 12:56

My five year old currently has cp and the one year old has been showing the symptoms of temp, sickness and bit of diarrhoea so I'm assuming he has caught the chicken pox and sounds like your little one has too!

Hi mooey did your son have CP? My son has some spots that look very much like the ones in your pics, they have pus in them, and I'm thinking it might be CP for him too. I tool him to the doctors and a clinical nurse practitioner said he has shingles 🤔 but he hasn't had CP but now there are a few more spots so think it's CP!

HermesAndPinot · 27/04/2018 20:51

There is a vaccination for CP

No need for a child to suffer this awful disease.
