Disclaimer : I have an 8 year old girl who loved 1D so I am subject to some songs I would rather not listen to.
Listening to Harry styles song and she asked me to look up the lyrics. Came across several articles saying he said the song is about childbirth and a young mother being told the baby will survive but she won't.
Here are the lyrics. Can anyone tell me what part is about childbirth??!!!
Just stop your crying
It's a sign of the times
Welcome to the final show
Hope you're wearing your best clothes
You can't bribe the door on your way to the sky
You look pretty good down here
But you ain't really good
If we never learn, we been here before
Why are we always stuck and running from
The bullets?
The bullets
We never learn, we been here before
Why are we always stuck and running from
The bullets?
The bullets
Just stop your crying
It's a sign of the times
We gotta get away from here
We gotta get away from here
Just stop your crying
It'll be alright
They told me that the end is near
We gotta get away from here
Just stop your crying

He said in a different interview it is about Brexit and the Black Lives Matter movement
I suspect that Harry Styles didn't have much input in the writing process, and he didn't actually ask the songwriter what it is about, so is having some fun with the press now to whip up some publicity for himself

That would make sense.
It seems to be about nothing. The song lists seven writers (including Styles) and it is just meaningless, diet angst with all the signs of being written by committee, probably written to a brief to make the former boybander appear 'adult' 'deep' and 'aware'.
Styles almost certainly had little to do with the composition, it is a well known and long established practice to take a writing credit whether they've contributed or not, they get a share of the writers royalties and credibility as an authentic musician who writes their own songs. The practice is known as 'change a word, get a third' in which songwriters pitching to star names are offered the choice between getting two-thirds of a writing credit of a potentially global hit or 100% of nothing.
Elvis wanted to record Dolly Parton's 'I will always love you' in exchange for a songwriting credit and 50% of the songwriting royalties. To her eternal credit, Dolly held her ground and told him to do one, so when Whitney came calling, she got 100% of a fuck tonne of money.

I imagine he probably is most of the time to be fair, if what you read and hear is anything to go by.
I also doubt he wrote it, given that most artists don't or simply buy the writing rights off somebody and whack their name on the songs. Most likely he was chatting shit and trying to engender himself to as many sets of people as possible by saying it's about various different virtue signalling topics. I don't dislike him specifically, or the song, but fame is such nonsense.
