To be irrationally annoyed by 'Breggsit'

Because it's Brexit and actually there are no G's in the whole entirety of the word?

It doesn't even appear to be a north/south pronunciation issue but entirely random.

What induces people to pronounce it in such a strange way (and get away with it)?

See also 'Eggsit' from whence I suspect it came.

It's awful isn't it?

I often hear interesting pronunciations of library and bibliography.

TheSecondOfHerName · 09/07/2017 20:58

About 'research':

In British English, I've noticed that a word can have different emphasis depending on if it is being used as a noun or a verb, as Addley says.

In American English, they don't always have the same distinction, and just pronounce both words the same way.

sodablackcurrant · 09/07/2017 21:02

paxillin,

Where I live it is Lybry, bibliography is too big a word at the minute, but bybliOgraphy is the way I say it.

paxillin · 09/07/2017 21:04

Li-Bairy and Bibbel-Ography are my favourites Grin.

Correct pronounciation of secretary is sec-re-terry..

Gwenhwyfar · 09/07/2017 22:53

"Correct pronounciation of secretary is sec-re-terry.."

No, there is no one correct pronunciation as it depends on your accent.

Davros · 09/07/2017 23:07

I hate Breggsit, it's definitely Breksit. I also hate nevew for nephew and conshumer instead of consumer (that twat Dominic Littlewood)

StealthPolarBear · 10/07/2017 06:07

I do not believe there is a Terry in it

KoalaDownUnder · 10/07/2017 06:23

Tony Blair's smarmy pronunciation and his extraneous fucking blinking makes me rageful angry

Re: the blinking - see also Hugh Grant. His entire acting consists of rapid blinking. Hate it.

Also, the way Gordon Ramsay pronounces 'restaurant'. REST-rnt.

GAAAAAH.

ArgyMargy · 10/07/2017 06:38

Eggsit and Breggsit are US-led pronunciations. Sec-ret-terry, lye-brerry for me.

TheMysteriousJackelope · 10/07/2017 13:55

It's not US pronunciation in the part of the US I live in.
