Meat-free days

Our work canteen has introduced a meat-free day each week. The problem is they have just substituted all the meat with cheese - instead of meat, all the wraps and salads have cheese fillings instead, and the hot meals will be things like paneer curry instead of meat curry.

AIBU to think this solves nothing of whatever they are trying to achieve with meat-free day?

If they've done it for environmental reasons, milk still comes from cows which are still massively polluting. If they've done it for ethical reasons, many dairy cows are still horribly mistreated. And if they've done it for health reasons, cheese is no healthier than meat.

I should point out I'm not a vegetarian so this isn't some kind of crusade to make the canteen go vegan! I just can't see what replacing meat with copious amounts of cheese is contributing.

Solves nothing.... and if it was me .... it would make me very sick.... (lactose issues in cheese)
If they had good vegetarian food, it could be quite interesting and fun....

maybe its lack of imagination , google some really nice veggie dishes print out the recipes and give them to them, mind you a lot of vegetarian as opposed to vegan dishes do substitute meat with cheese or eggs as its a source of protein

Ask them?

I'm veggie (and I do love cheese) but that just seems a) pointless and b) lazy

Dernerberker · 08/07/2017 21:09

It's just lazy to substitute meat for cheese. There are endless vegetarian and vegan dishes that stand well in their own right, without the need to have some sort of 'substitute'.

You're also absolutely right in that a meat free day where cheese is the alternative achieves absolutely for either the environment or animal welfare. It seems a complete waste of time.

Oops posted too soon was going to say I agree with issey maybe some suggestions would help I've been really pleased with how many lovely recipes and ideas there are and despite initially not going veggie by choice I now love it and probably wouldn't ever go back
