The new registration process will be implemented next week, meaning that upon joining, users will need to choose a username.

And before anyone else points it out, yes I know some contrary types will choose to go that way anyway. But presumably not many, so we'll be able to work out who they are. And if it makes life difficult for a few more trolls, it's got to be a plus, right?

I've been an MNer for about a decade, de-regged a few months ago so this is a new account. I was CURSED with the User..... thing for weeks. Unable to name change and stuck with it. Nearly de-regged again out of frustration.

Please. MNHQ, we have told you what we want and why, it shouldn't be so hard.

• Heading at the top of the OP saying 'this thread was started in January 2012' or whatever.
• Possibly the OP in a different colour.
• Something in the reply box no matter how many replies there are saying 'this thread was started 5 years ago' or whatever.

Hopefully no one will spend forever reading a thread, researching options or offering their opinions, only to find that the 6 year old being asked about in the OP is now 13.

It's hell trying to find a username that's not already taken. I'm not surprised people go with the easy option.

The User thing made it easier for trolls because of the confusion it caused. If a troll comes along called, say, FredaBlogs 123, it's a reasonable bet that you'll recognise her when she turns up again. However, if she's caused User148938663 there is nothing to distinguish her from all the other Users in practical terms.

Conversely, it'll make life easier for non-trolls. A lot of people seem for various reasons to have found that they couldn't change the User148etc name, so if you had a number of Users on a thread one of whom was being a troll or a twat or goading, then any other User who turned up got tarred with the same brush. And it's reached a point when, for a lot of people, if a User turns up they're assumed to be a troll until proven innocent.

Though, to be fair, I have the above username because I was getting so frustrated, as my first 10 (ish) attempts at usernames had already been taken!

Can't get too worked up about it it.

It won't deter the sort of troll who tells elaborate tales of their identical triplets being born in a snowstorm and then stolen away by their wicked grandmother but it will make plain old GFs easier to spot.

I like being a user. Much more anonymous without having to change your name.

But remember those trolls from the prostitute rating website? Instead of "user1234" they had dumbass names like "SarahThomasFromSunderland", trying at real names doh
