To cancel this Air BnB booking?

I had an amazing looking place on air bnb booked for a trip to London next week, but the host cancelled the booking earlier today Angry. So I panic booked another place, which doesn't look as nice, but now I'm wondering if it's a bit dodgy and whether I should cancel it and find somewhere else.

The reasons I'm not sure are that the host and the property don't have any feedback at all. He has been a member since December last year. In the pics of the flat, they look more like stock photos than real photos taken by the host IYSWIM. There is a photo of the bed, which folds down from the wall, and it still has the plastic wrapping on the mattress.

Despite not having any feedback, the flat is apparently booked up on the availability calendar for literally every single night for the next year, which seems strange in itself. Seems a bit of a coincidence that the one night I wanted it was free?

It's quite cheap for the location (£85) and guests apparently have parking and use of the gym. Now when I click on the property the price of it has gone down to £55 a night, but it isn't available at all for the next year. Seems a bit too good to be true maybe?

I have the address and google image searched the apartment block and it does match the pictures in the listing, and after I paid I got a message from the host immediately saying it was fine for us to stay there on Monday. I queried the parking and he confirmed there was parking, although wasn't specific about where it was exactly. I also asked what time we needed to leave the next day as it wasn't on the listing, and he said midday, but on his listing it says guests can check in anytime from 1pm. Surely an hour turnaround between guests is a bit quick?

I can cancel now and get a full refund apparently, but don't know if I'm being overly suspicious! I've never had anything but positive Air bnb experiences but something about this just doesn't sit right, and the last thing I want is to get to London and find I have nowhere to stay. WWYD?

It's too cheap. Something's not right. Sorry.

OnlyRose · 06/07/2017 23:12

I would cancel, sounds really dodgy. No feedback is a bad sign, I think, surely if anyone had ever stayed there before, they would have left feedback?

WildBelle · 06/07/2017 23:13

You would have thought so, onlyrose

And good detective work, hundredmiles. It is the exact same apartment!

Ok decision made, I just cancelled. Back to the drawing board!

Just had a quick look and you can get rooms at hub by Premier Inn on Monday at King's Cross for £81. Rooms are tiny but at least they're not a scam.

Found another photo of Cenk OP.
The scamming bastard.

In general with airbnb I'd say go with your gut... If there's anything you feel off about then don't do it.

WildBelle · 06/07/2017 23:31

Proper actual LOL at that Queen Grin although i realised LOLing is not permitted on MN.

Did look at the hub thing earlier but ideally would like somewhere a little roomier...read an online review and there's not even enough floor space for a bag! My BF is coming too, if it was just me I'd be happy with a shoebox.

WildBelle you'll need to up your budget then. £120/night is more realistic (and still at the very cheap end).

EachandEveryone · 06/07/2017 23:36

I think it looks lovely and clean

thereallochnessmonster · 06/07/2017 23:37

Hundred miles - how did you find where the photos really came from?great detective work!

HundredMilesAnHour · 06/07/2017 23:42

how did you find where the photos really came from?

If you look at Cenk's photos, they have "My London Home" printed on them. Quick Google reveals My London Home is an estate agent. Did a quick search on property they have to let and then to buy near King's Cross and hey presto, Cenk's studio appears. Saw it was the Plimsoll Building and cross-checked to the developer's website to confirm the accuracy. Grin

Tootsiepops · 06/07/2017 23:43

Are you able to report this to airbnb?

WomblingThree · 06/07/2017 23:44

Reverse image search I imagine.

WildBelle · 06/07/2017 23:44

I think I might have to up my budget yes. Just annoying as rather than refunding me for the cancelled booking from the first airbnb host I now have a voucher to use for the value of what I spent, so have £100 tied up there. Not the end of the world and I use airbnb fairly regularly so I'll use it one day.

WomblingThree · 06/07/2017 23:45

Oops x-post, but it is always worth doing a reverse image search if something looks dodgy.

nameohnameohname · 06/07/2017 23:48

How do you even do a reverse image search?

WildBelle · 06/07/2017 23:48

I think I might email airbnb about it, maybe I'll just send them a link to this thread, would be easier than explaining it over again.

HundredMilesAnHour · 06/07/2017 23:50

I'd be tempted to email the CEO at My London Home and report it to him so he can inform the current owner. Doesn't look like any of his staff. Probably just some scammer who's copied the photos from their website but you never know, he could be connected to the owner or the estate agent.

Seeingadistance · 06/07/2017 23:52

Definitely you should tell airbnb about this, and who knows, you might get another voucher from them, as well as saving others the hassle you've had.

And yes, as pp said, tell the estate agent about this.

HipsterHunter · 06/07/2017 23:59

Oh well done.

Still though what is the scam - surely airbnb don't pay over the cash to the host until after the visit? Or do they??

Sometimes you do hear about someone working for an EA who has keys doing some dodgy side sub letting of vacant properties....

HirplesWithHaggis · 07/07/2017 00:02

tineye.com is a reverse picture search engine.
