Hi my landlady had a right go at me because I changed who suppliers my electric. I'm trying to save a bit of money. I did not know I had to ask and I don't understand how she would have the right to tell me who I have to be with when I pay the bill.?

Trolls We weren't sure who one of our suppliers was, but we were very easily able to set up with a new supplier.

araiwa not so easy to top up the meter during the vacant periods when you are a couple of hundred miles away though.

trolls as mentioned, with the address it is the work of five minutes to find out who suppliers are. Taking over the account from the tenant takes another five. Any arrears remain with the tenant, not the address or the landlord.

Many things about running a property business are hard but this isn't one of them.

"Taking over the account from the tenant takes another five."

You can't take over another person's account. The company has to close it and open a new one for you. And it's not always five minutes, as some companies require you to prove you're not some random pretending to be a landlord to be spiteful and close down an existing account.

Trollspoopglitter So? It's not the tenant's problem.

Must be just me then.

Sorry for triggering the mn hair splitter. I did of course mean ' take over paying the bills for the property' excuse my dust.

Which tenant? The inconsiderate one who switches companies and doesn't tell the landlord? Or the new one who moves in, waits for the "new occupant" notice, doesn't get one, calls up and is told she can't open a new account as there is an existing one still active with another provider (but she can't close that account either as she's not the account holder)?

When I was a landlord I didn't care who tenants had as suppliers but I refused permission for a water meter as it was our family home and I didn't want to return to one. If it is a reversible decision then I think it is fine, if something is a permanent change then I would think you would need landlords agreement.

I'm a tenant and have never had an issue, why do you need to find out who the old account belonged to?
You simply ring up the energy company of your choice, open an account and give first day meter reading.
They inform the last supplier that they have taken over the property.

The last supplier sends out a final bill, either to LL or to last tenant, hopefully someone was wise enough to redirect their mail. If not, it's not the tennant's issue to pay a bill from before their tenancy.

I've never had an issue and have had several properties/landlords etc over the years.

I moved into a rental property and sorted out who the suppliers were (not who the agents thought they were), shopped around for the cheapest deal, and forwarded the both the previous tenant's unpaid £440 gas bill and the debt collector's letters to the agents. Never had a problem.
