To give up going to my Slimming World group

DarylDixonsJockstrap · 06/07/2017 18:59

I've been going for about a year now and have lost just over 2st, which is great. However, I'm finding the group a bit of a drag, especially as it's at 7:30am on a Saturday with no option of me going to a group at a different time as DH works shifts so no childcare every other week in the evenings.
Also i am finding the guilt trips from the leader and fellow members little bit tedious now. If you don't turn up one week there is always a 'motivational' text within a few hours and questions about why I've not turned up to group. Sometimes life happens or, shock horror, i can't be arsed! And you still have to pay for any sessions that you don't turn up to anyway so it's not like they're losing out. It just feels like such a racket and more about money grabbing than helping people lose weight and keep it off.
Surely there must be an easier and more straightforward (and cheaper!) Way of losing weight??

For context...i have always been overweight and currently need to lose at least 2 more stone to be a healthy weighy for my height. I have a very addictive, all or nothing personality so find the structure of a diet plan helpful, but hate the groups!

Any help or advice would be very gratefully recieved.

I think you need to do what is best for you. It seems as though your participation in the group worked very well for a while, but it's not making you very happy now. There is nothing wrong with deciding to go in a new direction. Maybe you could create your own group that can meet on occasion and support each other through email, texts, etc.

LoudestRoar · 06/07/2017 19:03

I sometimes just go to weigh in and leave before the meeting. If the meeting part isn't helping you, I'd just use it to keep track of your weight.

It's a shame you can't get to another group. Mine is great, and has helped me stay on track, but I've been to some that are uselessGrin

RockyBird · 06/07/2017 19:04

Have a look for rebelfit on Facebook and Richie Howey. They both have plenty to say about SW.

OwlinaTree · 06/07/2017 19:06

You could try online membership if you feel the actual diet is working for you. There are support threads here on mumsnet.

CarrotFingers · 06/07/2017 19:08

7:30 seems so early! Could you say you've lost your phone and haven't got a new number yet, or have it removed from the list to avoid the 'motivational' texts? I've not long started WW and don't find the meetings too helpful, not awful or anything, just not useful, but there's no inquisition if I don't go!

alltalknobaby · 06/07/2017 19:13

Another vote for Rebelfit. Eye opening. Well done on your weight loss Smile

summerlovinggirl · 06/07/2017 19:14

I do slimming world without going to any groups. I brought all the books I needed off eBay. I was told I wouldn't lose weight doing it on my own but I've lost a stone and a half in just over 2 months. It would've been more but I had a week off due to various reasons. You could try maintaining the diet without group.
Either way if the group is no longer working for you, drop it and try something else. Good luck!

yummycake123 · 06/07/2017 19:16

I've given up. It wasn't working for me and the group times didn't suit me at all (ie 7.30pm, I was getting home after 9!)
If you still want to keep doing SW you could try doing it online?

Saladd0dger · 06/07/2017 19:18

Been doing slimming world from home for ages now. There's lots of Facebook groups. I use the slimming world done from home group and syns allowed

Allthewaves · 06/07/2017 19:18

Why not head to the gym or find an exercise class that's the same time. That way u can track your weight at the gym and burn some calories

gabsdot · 06/07/2017 19:20

DH and I have recently started doing slimming world online. It's working well as we have each other to motivate each other.
If you do stop going maybe try and get a slimming buddy to be accountable to.

Milliemoo37 · 06/07/2017 19:26

I used to do Slimming World and it worked really well for me, I lost 2 stone. I'm not sure what period of time though. I went to the weigh ins then left after meetings as I couldn't stand it when they announced everybody's weight loss and you had to clap/cheer for everyone.
~shudders at the memory~
Maybe I just hate people though.

DarylDixonsJockstrap · 06/07/2017 20:26

Thanks all for your replies. I have all the books and I fully intend to carry on with the plan myself, just not go to the groups. But I'm worried that without having anyone to be accountable to, it will all just slip back on.
A SW buddy might be an idea! Thanks to PP who suggested that.

I second RockyBirds suggestion of Richie Howie (Team RH) if you need a good structure. You work out your calories based on what you burn, have a certain percentage of carbs, fat & protein and can eat whatever you want within those! Nothing is off limits! It's called flexible dieting. £3.50 a month, an online support group of over 7000 & all questions answered. I've been consistently losing 2lbs a month, eating loads and actually learned about nutrition & how to lose fat for the first time in 36 years! Look it up and you'll see the success stories.

DarylDixonsJockstrap · 06/07/2017 21:58

Thanks penelope i will check it out

You clearly know what to do now so just stop. What are they going to do, make you wear a weight belt ???

ChandlersNubbin · 06/07/2017 22:27

I don't think half a pound a week on average is a great loss tbh so YANBU to leave for that reason alone. A 500 cal deficit should give you a weight loss of 1lb per week, so that implies to me that SW isn't working for you. I lost 1-4lb a week on SW when in normal BMI range!

Richie Howie is a patronising sanctimonious shit though. Maybe he knows his stuff, but he's a very unpleasant person.

RockyBird · 06/07/2017 22:31

Rebelfit is a less shouty version but principles along the same line as Howey. Howey makes me laugh but yes, I do find him long winded. Both fb pages are very informative without having to join up.

TillyTheTiger · 06/07/2017 22:37

I'm another convert from SW to rebelfit, a bit ranty and sweary but it has definitely changed the way I think about health and fitness

ZefStar · 06/07/2017 23:21

Every single thread started about slimming world draws out rebelfit fans.
Is it some new mlm scheme?

RockyBird · 06/07/2017 23:23

No

PenelopePuddleduck · 07/07/2017 08:06

I also meant to say huge well done on your weight loss so far! Losing weight is so hard and 2st is fantastic. Please ignore people who say that half a pound a week 'isn't great weight loss'.

INeedANameChange · 07/07/2017 12:02

Please ignore people who say that half a pound a week 'isn't great weight loss'.

On any objective viewing, it isn't great weight loss for a supposed diet plan.

The NHS say "safe" weight loss is 1-2lb a week.

CheeseOfHearts · 07/07/2017 12:10

Any weight loss is good if it's consistent (and if you need to, obviously). There's no rush. And if you're not liking the social aspect of it, don't do it. You're right, the constant guilt tripping is unnecessary and purely done for business reasons.

The whole point of SW, supposedly, is to get you into a healthier lifestyle which you adopt permanently. If you've already got the hang of how it all works, there's no need to go back. You'd be better off spending money on some sort of exercise class or active hobby

Dulra · 07/07/2017 12:16

I have lost 3 stone on sw only stayed for a meeting once. Once I got what I was meant to do never felt the need to stay but I did need the weekly weigh ins to keep me on track. 7.30am on a sat is early though are you sure there are no other groups near
