To stand during the whole hair cut

I moved a couple of years ago and am struggling to find a decent hairdressers. Sometimes I travel back 50miles to get it done at the place I know will do a great job.

Today I opted for local salon and asked for a dry trim. I'd already washed and straightened it so didn't want to bother putting it through all that again. We decided I needed about 3 inches off and a bit of shaping through the front. I was gowned and a rubber mat place around my neck resting on my shoulders. She then asked me to stand up. My hair is past my shoulders but nowhere near my bum and I can't understand why she asked me to stand. Other places have highered the chair and sat on a stool behind. I kept thinking she would say I could sit down but no I was made to stand still for almost 25min, I could feel the sweat gushing out of me and I kept commenting how hot I was. I was so relieved to just get out the shop, I'm a little surprised they charged £26 for such a simple job. It was a very uncomfortable experience not the relaxing pampering you expect.

To top it all she didn't straighten my parting after messing it up and didn't touch my fringe once. I was just glad to get out of there.

AIBU to of been made to stand for the duration of my trim ?

Is this the norm anywhere else?

She didn't make you stand, you just weren't assertive enough to sit down. Sorry, yabu.

bonfireheart · 04/07/2017 22:42

Were any other customers standing up?

Rayna37 · 04/07/2017 22:48

Probably not the norm but then neither is asking for a dry cut. Most hairdressers would say you can't do a proper cut dry, I think? They might have been better to say no if they were uncomfortable doing it.

Eemamc · 04/07/2017 22:55

I've done this before when my hair was long... I think it's easier to get a straight even cut this way without the chair in the way. Can you not normally stand up for 25 minutes?

SylviaPoe · 04/07/2017 22:57

Was it Saks? They make you stand if you have long hair (or used to, haven't been for a few years).

bunnyhun · 04/07/2017 23:08

Nobody else was standing up, it felt odd. It's surprisingly difficult to stand completely still like a statue for 25 min, trying not to lean so that I got a straight cut, plus gowned up. I know I asked for a dry cut but other places have sprayed it first which is what I expected.

I should of asked to sit down but I'm used to putting the hairdresser in control and didn't want wonky hair.

Yeah, my hairdresser gets me to stand. I also have very long hair. And I know what you mean, you feel a bit cheated out of your nice relaxing time. You shouldn't do it if it's actually painful or uncomfortable though- tell her you need a break.

BBQueen · 05/07/2017 07:12

Maybe she had a bad back?

BBQueen · 05/07/2017 07:12

Or he, sorry

WonderLime · 05/07/2017 07:23

My hairdresser is very tall and my hair is long, so when she cuts the ends I usually stand.

Though I'm pretty sure I only stand for 5-10 mins.

RelaxMax · 05/07/2017 07:25

Doesn't sound nice at all, and yes standing still for that long is very hard. That's why police officers soft of roll up on their toes every now and then when they're standing still.

I wouldn't go back there again.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 05/07/2017 07:26

I used to have very long hair down passed my bum. No hairdresser ever got me to stand Confused

swapsicles · 05/07/2017 07:30

I've not been asked to stand before, i understand why though as the back of the chair can make cutting very long hair awkward.
They could have sat you on a stool or just finished your hair off whilst stood up, no need to stand the whole time surely?

BabsGanoush · 05/07/2017 07:34

My teen DD has long hair and the hairdresser gets her to stand.

GlitterRoseGold · 05/07/2017 07:35

I find it disrespectful. You shouldn't have to stand it's their job to accommodate you. I would have said no

IrritatedUser1960 · 05/07/2017 07:38

I have to stand for my hair but then it is very long. She doesn't sound very experienced.

BeepBeepMOVE · 05/07/2017 08:12

Standing completely still for hairdresser has had me faint a few times back when I had long long hair, apparently it can cause a funny turn. It's important to keep moving something like fingers and they should make you move every 5 mins or so. Someone explained all the science years ago but I've forgotten.

YABU to ask fo dry cut though. That's tricky. Also don't think it would include styling so no straightening is expected.

Amaried · 05/07/2017 08:14

In surprised that your hair dresser does dry cuts. I know my hairdresser definitely doesn't as they don't want to handle dirty hair. (Their explanation time)

goldopals · 05/07/2017 08:25

My hair is mid thigh length. I am always asked to stand. It doesn't really matter if I shift and it is slightly crooked... No could tell .

It seems very odd that you were asked to stand for so long with such relatively short hair

bunnyhun · 05/07/2017 17:09

I remember being told years ago by a hairdresser to never cross your legs whilst haves cut as it affects your posture and can cause a wonky hair cut, this was in my mind whilst standing and I tried not to slouch or move at all in case it caused problems. The heat and the gown really didn't help, any longer and I would of fainted. Yes I do feel cheated out of a pampering experience. I won't be going back.

teaandtoast · 05/07/2017 17:34

I did that once when I had long hair. A relaxing experience it isn't!

BoomBoomsCousin · 05/07/2017 18:02

I've been asked to stand before when I had longer hair, it let the stylist see how my hair fell properly without the back of the chair in the way.

I don't think it's unreasonable to ask someone to stand and expect them to mention if standing is or becomes a problem. While there are some people who would find it difficult, it's not an unnatural pose or something that the normal body should find to be that taxing. I have difficulty holding my head forward (chin to chest) which hairdressers often ask of me. I just let them know when it becomes difficult.

YANBU to be annoyed they didn't even touch your fringe or sort out your parting though (unless the messed up parting was deliberate, which seems to be a 'thing' nowadays).

RandomUsernameHere · 05/07/2017 22:07

I've been asked to stand for the whole cut once before. I have very long hair. Most places manage to cut it fine with me sitting though.

Buildmeupbuttercup89 · 05/07/2017 23:01

I really, really want to see a pic of gold's hair!!!!
