The doorbell rang this afternoon. I opened the door to find a wee guy standing there. Parked on the street was a van with tree cutting equipment. He looks at me and says 'I chapped your door the other day. Your bushes are a disgrace and that tree has to go.'

I told him sharply that his opinion was not wanted, the bushes are perfectly fine as they are and he could fuck off.

I'm furious! I get that he was touting for business, but that was hardly the way. The more I think about it, the more annoyed I get! Cheeky fecker! Tell me I wasn't BU to tell him to fuck off?

I would be annoyed, too, but what concerns me most is that you opened the door to a complete stranger. Who knows what he's really after? I would never, ever open my door to a stranger.

Acqua opening your door to strangers is pretty normal. Delivery drivers, couriers, meter readers, charity collectors, political party reps, new neighbours etc etc

The tree is a graceful rowan, which is festooned with solar lights. The bushes are not a disgrace at all and one of the bushes is actually a tree.

To compound things, not two minutes later I got a phone call from some firm asking me about the car accident I had. I asked him if it was the one that I died in, and that he could fuck right off because he was a total wanker and if he called again, he could expect a visit from the police as he had been stupid enough not to block his number.

And breathe...

Another one who's quite baffled that someone recommends never opening your door to strangers. Id say that to a child of course, but I'd say about half the time I answer my door it is to a stranger. How else would I sign for deliveries?

Re the op. I can't decide if I love or hate his style. I'd need to see the garden to know for sure . It also depends a lot on his tone and mannerisms. Some people are charming enough to pull off this sort of comment.
