Well, today is the 4th July - American Independence Day.

Courtesy of the interwebs there is this photo below. I have a few American colleagues at work and they all found this amusing

They have newspapers and tv/radio news in America you know.

Chartreuse45 · 04/07/2017 19:19

I think Donald Trump made a few references to it in his speeches and he had invited Nigel Farage to the States where he spoke at at least one of his rallies.

spamm · 05/07/2017 02:27

Not sure what you think about America, but of course Brexit was widely reported and it is commented on in the news regularly. I generally find my US friends to be reasonably well educated on international issues, although I know that I live in a more diverse and educated area than some, as I am just outside Washington D.C.

I know much of Mumsnet has a very negative impression of the US, but it is not very fair and not very representative.

newbian · 05/07/2017 02:48

YABU and you know it.

Seriously this anti-American attitude on MN is so irritating.

Want2bSupermum · 05/07/2017 03:03

How ignorant that you would presume Americans to not know about Brexit. Of course everyone here knows about Brexit. Most here in NYC know who Boris Johnson and Sadiq Khan are. A surprising number know who Farage is.

Americans aren't the idiots you think they are. I've worked here 10 years now and they have a good education system here.

LellyMcKelly · 05/07/2017 03:05

Au contraire. This isn't anti-American at all. It's very funny. Bravo, Americans. Bravo.

SenecaFalls · 05/07/2017 03:09

National news in the US has covered Brexit fairly well. And your most recent election result was the lead story on all the major networks.

The Queen's EU opening of Parliament hat made the news here too.

SapphireSeptember · 05/07/2017 03:11

I know we're a pretty small country, but I'm also pretty sure Brexit made international news and Americans aren't stupid. Samantha Bee did a hilarious segment on it on Full Frontal featuring David Tennant, Stephen Colbert talked about it on The Late Show. I know I pick this stuff up on YouTube and don't watch it live, so to speak, but it's there.

Also, we live in the age of social media, it was all over Twitter and Facebook. So even if the news outlets in the USA had somehow managed to miss it people would still have picked up on it. Even one of the religious blogs I read did a post on it, which was a surprise at the time as it's very US-centric.

LoupGarou · 05/07/2017 03:26

Well I'm not sure which parts of the US the previous posters live in but up here its still The Pony Express, telegrams and Ol' Man Riley printing the weekly paper in his shop on one of those highfalutin new fangled things.

Of course that's assuming he stumbles out of the saloon on time on Wednesdays, if not....well Janie and her girls'll be pleased with the extra coins but I can't say as myself and the rest of the good, honest God-fearing townsfolk will

Teabagtits · 05/07/2017 03:33

Of course Americans know about Brexit, we're a global laughing stock because of it.

Well played America, that was very clever!

RedBullBlood · 05/07/2017 04:00

It's not the sign that's anti American, Lelly, it's the op's surprise that Americans know about Brexit.

mmgirish · 05/07/2017 04:00

That's a very insulting attitude. Do you think American people are stupid? Did you know they have a new president called Donald? If so, how did you find out???

BeALert · 05/07/2017 04:09

I've been celebrating USexit 1776 today :-)

Shadow666 · 05/07/2017 04:15

Shouldn't it be Amexit?

RedBullBlood · 05/07/2017 04:24

Why Amexit? Independence Day in the US celebrates their independence from Great Britain.

RedBullBlood · 05/07/2017 04:25

You know those times you hit post then realise you've misunderstood?
Amexit. I see. Now.

mathanxiety · 05/07/2017 04:27

Yes they know all about Brexit, and like most of the rest of the world they do not for the life of them understand what possessed British people to vote for it.

SenecaFalls · 05/07/2017 04:48

Brexit 1776 does work because we were British (for the most part) when we exited. I had a history professor who would refer to the American Revolution as the first civil war fought on American soil.

user1497480444 · 05/07/2017 05:16

The entire world knows about Brexit, it was one of the most incredulism inducing stories of last year. No one could quite believe anyone was doing anything quite so self destructive. It was normally the first thing I was asked about in East Africa, or Turkey when anyone realised I was British. Shop assistant, taxi drivers, people on trains etc. When asked "why??????" I just used to answer "It was an accident"

UK votes to leave UN??

Fox News innit.

Allthebestnamesareused · 05/07/2017 06:29

I posted a screenshot of the Fox News Report saying we'd voted to leave the UN and an American friend said well you did. I said no we voted to leave the EU. She said must be a typo it's only one letter out Grin
