Girls as young as 9 asking for labiaplasty because of porn ☹️

Aibu that this is all sorts of wrong?! There are girls in the world being forced into FGM. There are causes around the world to stop this from happening yet "In 2015-16, more than 200 girls under 18 had labiaplasty on the NHS, and over 150 of the girls were under 15."

The doctors who carried out these "operations" are just as bad as the people who cut off girl's clitorises or sew them up illegally. 😡😡

I don't think it is only porn to blame. Our whole society is riddled with damaging beauty messages.

When are people going to wake up and realise the damage the cosmetics industry is doing to the minds of our children?

ElspethFlashman · 03/07/2017 10:08

So in the article it's one random GP speculating that it's porn and social media. Yeah, that's not exactly a scientific sample, sorry.

We know nothing about these girls genitals. It trivialises their experiences to basically imply they want to look like a porn star. Some labia are actually uncomfortable to even sit on.

BarbarianMum · 03/07/2017 10:08

I believe labiaplasty can include operations of young girls whose labias fuse after birth (or before). If I'm right about that, then i would hope these cases account for the 150 operations on girls under 15.

araiwa · 03/07/2017 10:10

why are 9 year old girls watching porn

i would imagine most of these operations on young people are due to medical reasons

EB123 · 03/07/2017 10:10

I am more inclined to believe that these girls have health issues that are being treated with this operation rather than for cosmetic reasons.

ElspethFlashman · 03/07/2017 10:12

It's just total clickbait. The GP who presumes it's porn doesn't actually know why those under 15s had the surgery or what their medical need was.

I'm not really sure I believe it TBH.

I think it's far more likely that these girls have anomalies due to being intersex- or some other medical need.

Morphene · 03/07/2017 10:15

bbc are also reporting on this, with info from actual patients

Yeah, ok, the NHS is doling out genital surgery to kids who HAVEN'T EVEN FINISHED DEVELOPING YET because they're unhappy with how their labia look due to the copious amounts of porn they're watching.

THINK about that for a second.

StickThatInYourPipe · 03/07/2017 10:16

I very much doubt a child of nine even knows the word tbh if they are having that surgery or requesting anything like that is will be a medical reason or a comfort reason

Oh and the guy man who said this:

"It can change people fundamentally, the feelings they have about themselves, their confidence and self-esteem.
"I have seen patients aged between 16 and 21 who have never had a boyfriend because they are so concerned about this."

can fuck right off.

If a woman has a self-esteem problem then treat their self-esteem, NOT their perfectly normal functional labia.

SaucyJack · 03/07/2017 10:20

How do you know if they have perfectly normal, functional labia Morphene?

OhDearToby · 03/07/2017 10:23

I'm 99% sure that these operations are for health reasons and not because 9yo's are watching porn and deciding their genitals are inferior.

FlyingElbows · 03/07/2017 10:23

Any surgeon who is performing any sort of genital surgery purely to make adolescent girls more appealing to men should be struck off!

Notreallyarsed · 03/07/2017 10:25

Unless it's for a medical reason I honestly can't wrap my head around this surgery being performed on children. And if it is because they're comparing to other labia how the hell are they seeing them? That's the problem.

Morphene · 03/07/2017 10:26

saucy because the quote was with reference to people wanting the operation for cosmetic reasons. Cosmetic reasons means not medical or functional reasons.

It is very straight forward to separate these out. Doctors and plastic surgeons aren't idiots!

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 03/07/2017 10:28

It's being discussed on Victoria live now. They have a pediatric gynae consultant on who said the "medical reasons" argument is nonsense as she has never seen a teenager who needed labiaplasty for medical reasons. She has seen a few who think they do though.

Morphene · 03/07/2017 10:29

Apparently the NHS will do it for reasons that include 'clinical' which I imagine we can get behind and 'emotional distress' which I can't get behind at all. Surgery isn't the solution to 'emotional distress'.

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 03/07/2017 10:32

If girls are unhappy with their labial appearance at puberty, god help them when they give birth :(

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 03/07/2017 10:33

Oh ffs
'Hannah' says "I had this op as a teen and if I hadn't I would have self mutilated"

Just another version of "do as I say or I'll kill myself"

Oliversmumsarmy · 03/07/2017 10:37

But surely if 9year olds are comparing themselves to porn stars they have a parental problem not a medical one

ElspethFlashman · 03/07/2017 10:39

I suspect"for medical reasons" is a very very narrow definition. Basically unless your labia interfere with your urination or menstruation.
