Is the school mad. There must be a number of parents who think this is mad. I'm a Christian and we believe in fasting but not for children.

On the other hand if all the children are doing it will she feel left out if she's not aloud too.

Maybe calling school 1st thing for them to explain is a good idea. If she real wants to do it can you not get her some kind of energy sweets and energy drink so she keeps her strength up. But I agree personally that I wouldn't want my dd to do it but also wouldn't want her to be the only different one in case the other children picked on her.

When I was at primary school we weren't allowed playtime snacks, and I don't remember my friends from other schools having them either - I assumed it was just some new vogue. ds1 is allowed to bring in one snack (fruit), but generally doesn't get round to eating it tbh. I can see that if your dd isn't having breakfast then there may be an issue, but personally i wouldn't be fussed is ds1 had to give up his apple for one day (and I suspect neither would he). Asking him to give up lunch on the other hand would be a very differnt matter.

I wonder whether it would be better to keep your dd off for the day rather that let her be the odd one out. Seems like a perfect time for a diplomatic illness!

mousiemousie · 23/03/2007 06:29

this is a misplaced idea - I would object to the school

earlgrey · 23/03/2007 06:40

Have only read the title, so excuse me if this has been already said.

Have the school gone stark raving mad???? Is it a religious school. DDs school is always asking for money for one charity or another, but ffs, they're PRIMARY school children and need all the calories they can get.

OrmIrian · 23/03/2007 08:19

We used to have a tear fund fast every term at my school. Actually it wasn't a fast - we had soup and bread for lunch rather than a big cooked meal. But we were secondary level not 6.

marialuisa · 23/03/2007 10:27

This is quite a common thing in RC primaries though. The kids just get a drink at morning break rather than a drink with an apple, it's not comparable to a Good Friday fast or fasting during Ramadan!

If you don't want your DD to take part thats' your choice but I don't think missing an apple at 10.30 is particularly extreme.

SherlockLGJ · 23/03/2007 10:30

It is a piece of fruit.

Assuming the child has had a decent breakfast and they are having their lunch I fail to see the issue, I really do.

SherlockLGJ · 23/03/2007 10:31

And I am aware that AM Jr does not eat breakfast and so it is somewhat different, but the world is going mad it really is.

Judy1234 · 23/03/2007 10:35

In the atholic church just like the jews you are not technically within the requirement for fasting and abstinence on Good Friday and Ash Wednesday until you're about 14 I think it is. It's the same with Muslims - similar exclusions eg if you're ill or pregnant during ramadam. But we're just talking here about not eating between breakfast and lunch time. Arguably it's better not to eat then anyway and have a bit breakfast and big lunch with no snacks. Children eat far too many snacks so it's not really fast at all, just skipping their apple at break time.

pooka · 23/03/2007 10:35

But as Aimsmum said, her dd is currently not eating much breakfast and has been having dizzy spells so presumably relies quite heavily on her morning snack.
Agree that wouldn't really faze me with a child that eats a hearty breakfast and is otherwise well and healthy. But in this case I don't think the OP is being unreasonable.
