Kids in warsaw

Wanted to take DH on a minibreak to Warsaw, looks like we might have to take the kids which means we would have to alter our itinerary. Has anyone been with children? Google doesn't seem to bring up many child friendly activities! WIBU to take them with us or try harder to get childcare? I have heard it is quite a grey and 'dreary' city (we are going because DH best friend is out there)

Not been with kids so can't help there but the centre is not dreary. It was all destroyed in the war so it much in the way of historical sites and quaint old buildings but the centre is quite buzzing, lots of restaurants, nice bars, pavement cafes etc.

Suburbs are a bit dreary though.

Ok that is good to hear, we would be going to the centre. Just struggling to find things to do that would be suitable with the children! It's in October too so not going to be that nice for parks even.

I have heard that there are no children in Warsaw. Hmm

My DB lives in Warsaw, he has a 3 & 12 yr old, & we visit a lot with 2 dcs (from when they were teeny til now; they're 8& 10. Never had problems finding things to do. In Oct you can still get lovely sunny days & the Łazienki park is gorgeous, the red squirrels there are v friendly & will come & eat from your hands. My kids loved getting the lift to the top of Palace of Science & Culture, & the Kopernicus Centre (Science Museum) which has loads specifically for kids.

Here's a decent website.. www.warsawtour.pl/en/warsaw-for-kids.html

There are some amazing museums (like the Uprising Museum) if your kids are older- we've not taken ours yet but will in a few years.

If it's rainy / you're not in the mood for exploring / need some down time, it is also worth going to one of the huge & kind of amazing malls where there are enormous cinema complexes- live action films have polish subtitles, not dubbing (animated films are dubbed though) so it's great for English speakers.. The Złote Tarasy (Golden Terraces) mall is right by the central train station.

In October there is also a children's theatre festival www.korczak-festival.pl/ (my 2 don't speak polish & we have found shows that they've enjoyed)

Not sure when it starts but in Autumn/ Winter there is also an illuminated garden (lots of pretty lights!) in the Wilanów Palace after dusk.

I ❤️ Warsaw..

Warsaw is a beautiful city- or at least the old town and the new town are. The "New town" is "new" in the same way that Edinburgh's New Town is- ie not at all. Both were substantially rebuilt after WWII. Hotels are substantially cheaper than other European cities. I stayed in 2 fabulous 5 star hotels for around £160 per night.

It would not be my first choice for children

A trip(or several) to Wedel for desserts and hot chocolates are essential!

We went to Warsaw a couple of years ago, before heading down to Krakow. Both of my kids loved it there (they were 9 & 14 at the time).
There's a huge mall next to the train station, the old town is beautiful and the park near the unknown soldier was lovely to sit in a people watch whilst the youngest played in the park area. There's a little cafe called Dwoch Takich on Krakowskie Przedmieście that, according to my dds does the best homemade lemonade in the world.
Train travel is so cheap in Poland if you're there for a while you could head out for a day somewhere else.
Have fun!
