Quick question - midgie bites

Ds1 has just come back from a residential trip he loved it and I'm in awe of his teachers however he is covered in midgie bites, I means he must have over 100+ on his face, ears and behind his ears, I haven't checked his body yet.

I've given his antihistamine and poured him a hot bath, is there anything I can do, he is covered in what looks like pox, some are very angry.

All I have in the house is double base, E45, oilitatum and my younger sons steroid creams.

I wouldn't give him a hot bath. Could you get calamine lotion to dab on?

Poor DS though. Midgie bites are murder.

Not a hot bath as it opens the pores! Cold bath to close them!!! I was told this when I had a massive histamine reaction to something.

I was sent to out of hours earlier this week (111 wanted a&e which was ridiculous) for a bite on my boob! I've been given antihistamine and hydrocortisone cream (over the counter stuff from Tesco) taken a few days but it isn't going down now. Can't use cream above the neck so maybe worth a trip to gp.

Tea tree oil in a bath can be soothing for insect bites.

He's filty, they went mountain climbing this morning, apparently the midgies were so bad the only way to get them off them was to jump is the lake. However as it's been raining for most of the day he looks likes he's been dragged through just ploughed farm land Grin

I think I'm going to have to phone my SIL to go and buy some lotion. Dh is away for the weekend.

His bath won't be scalding hot, however it will be warm and anyway the boy hates water on his head Hmm

I have loads of tee tree oil, so will stick that in.

I've got cortisone cream also, not sure if I want to use that on his face tho.

1% hydrocortisone will be fine on the face used sparingly on small areas. My DS has eczema and we use it for a week at a time every few months on his face since he was a baby (he is under a paediatric dermatologist) and I've been given it by a GP too for an allergic reaction on my face a couple of years ago. Twice a day for 3 days.

Antihistamine tabs too.

I grew up in the highlands. Midgie bites are a nightmare. Spraying perfume on them can stop the itch but I'm not sure how he would feel about that Confused

Avon skin so soft when holidaying in Scotland in the future.

Eurax cream stops itching instantly.

DancingLedge · 30/06/2017 17:26

Anthisan cream. Its an antihistamine.

StatelessPrincess · 30/06/2017 18:12

Germoline is great for itchy bites.

GrimDamnFanjo · 30/06/2017 18:26

Definitely antihistamine ASAP. That should take away the itching and any swelling.

Something that may provide relief is blowing hot air from a hairdryer onto the bites as hot and as long as possible and repeat often - the heat will make them itch like crazy but it releases the pus inside the bites so they heal faster. Hope that helps
