To wonder why people do "top-up" shops

Just as the title says really. I've read a few threads where people either mention a fortune doing a top-up shop or mention doing a top-up shop as a job that needs doing in the week.

We shop once a week and buy enough food for the week. We then don't buy any more food until the following week. Other than folks who have very little storage (or possibly very large families?) I can't really understand the need to do a top-up shop. I mean obviously if you want to go and get something different to what you have in, that's fine. But why do it if you see it as a chore?

I do them.

Maybe the dc get a food tech homework, maybe I need something like spinach or coriander that I'd rather have fresh.

dailymailarecunts · 30/06/2017 09:04

Doesn't your bread / milk go yuck before the weeks up though? What about other sell by dates or wanting fresher food?

somewhereovertherain · 30/06/2017 09:04

Not sure the weeks we plan the menu we don't do them. The weeks we don't we can do them and seem to have more waste spend more money.

PrimalLass · 30/06/2017 09:05

I don't understand why you don't understand.

dailymailarecunts · 30/06/2017 09:05

Oh! And I see it as a chore because I'm rubbish and I go in for bread / milk and come out with a new set of pyjamas, a candle and some wine......

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 30/06/2017 09:05

We meal plan and if we plan something for Friday that is nicer fresh then I get it on Thursday or Friday rather than DH getting it during the weekly shop the weekend previous.

PhilODox · 30/06/2017 09:06

Bread isn't nice after six days! Nor are lettuces.

MyOtherNameIsTaken · 30/06/2017 09:07

We buy long dated food, milk goes in the fridge and we freeze bread. No need for top up shops - plus it's a 10 mile drive to the nearest supermarket! That focuses your mind when shopping! Grin

loaferloveforyou · 30/06/2017 09:07

Theres only 2 of us and we eat lots of fresh fruit and veg so during the week we do top up shops.

Plus we never know what we want to eat from one day to the next so may do a top up shop if we fancy something which we haven't got in already.

Although; we don't really do a "big" shop (maybe once a month?) so all our shops are "top up" in a way.

Writerwannabe83 · 30/06/2017 09:07

We buy fresh vegetables, fruit and bread as we need them so tend to go to Supermarket about three times a week just for this reason.

There's nothing better than a loaf of bread that's just been put on the supermarket shelf that morning as opposed to opening one that's been sat in the bread bin for almost a week.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 30/06/2017 09:07

Can't see your problem, really.
I can't do a weekly shop, I'm not geared for that and don't have the space.
I probably go to the shop about 2 or 3 times a week, as needed, for the things we need then. None of them are "top-up" shops though, they're all "shopping for what we need".

jingscrivvens · 30/06/2017 09:07

To buy fresher veg/meat, buy more milk/bread. Or if I can't get to the shops on my normal big shop day i.e. if I have to go on a Sun rather than a Sat, I'll do a top up on the Fri to tide us over.

crazypenguinlady · 30/06/2017 09:08

Because most of us need more bread/milk/cheese/bananas and/or things that are better when fresh such as herbs. It's really not that hard to understand, surely? Confused

AngelaTwerkel · 30/06/2017 09:08

Don't you ever forget shit?

MaidenMotherCrone · 30/06/2017 09:08

Erm, because bread gets eaten, milk used up, more wine than previously expected may be drunk. There are 5 adults in the house and we don't regulate food so you know sometimes we need to buy more of something.

Oncandystripedlegs · 30/06/2017 09:08

I always need bread, milk and bananas by Wednesday. I would rather get them fresh than have them hanging about all week

MissBax · 30/06/2017 09:08

Because fresh veg / fruit / bread doesn't last a week, how is that mind boggling?

Ameliablue · 30/06/2017 09:08

Partly because I'd rather have the ingredients as fresh as possible and not everything will last a week.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 30/06/2017 09:09

But, and I meant to add this in before posting, our shop is only 2 mins up the road, so it's no biggy to go this often. If I had to drive for half an hour or more to do the shopping, I'd probably try a bit harder to get it all in once a week!

Cocklodger · 30/06/2017 09:10

Because some people are paid monthly/four weekly so have to shop every month and then buy smaller bits (bread/milk) in the week as without a large freezer you can't really buy all of your frozen stuff and freeze a months worth of fresh stuff in order to avoid top up shops?

Pagwatch · 30/06/2017 09:10

I don't like six day old lettuce. Or raspberries. Or strawberries. Or milk.

tabulahrasa · 30/06/2017 09:11

Fruit, veg, milk, bread...meat if I ate it.

I don't do too up shops as such because I tend not to do a big one, but I'd have thought it was pretty obvious what sort of stuff you'd want to be fresher.

Wh0Kn0wsWhereTheTimeGoes · 30/06/2017 09:11

We prefer our milk, bread, salad and fruit to be fresh not a week old, that's why.

I drive past several supermarkets on the way home from work and live within 1/2 mile of three. I don't see why you wouldn't TBH unless you lived miles from shops.

hungrywalrus · 30/06/2017 09:12

I misread the title as 'topup shoes' and opened to find out what on earth those were. Guess who needs a giant cup of tea, eh?

ShoeJunkie · 30/06/2017 09:13

Because my children get through more milk, bread and fruit than I have room to store in the fridge/freezer in one go.
