I can't imagine why I would think this email was a scam. AIBU.

This is Gen John Kelly, Secretary of homeland security department. We know that you have not received your fund from Africa! we have finally cash your $9.7million abandoned long-lost cherub confirming to be your won compensation funds, we cash the monies and we decided to boxed the money for avoiding expiry of the cherub because it has stayed long in our custody searching for your contact to reach you, after our investigation that we discovered that the money is not an illegal payment. So kindly reconfirm your full address the delivery fee is only $200 that will be the last money you will pay.

Cherub is a good name for a cat or a pet hamster.

Thewolfsjustapuppy · 29/06/2017 22:53

Well I am dyslexic and I can categorically state that I understood every word of that email and I will cancel the cherub tomorrow.
YABU £200 is very little downpayment for such a big potential reward, pay up and let's have a party

StephanieAteMyLunch · 29/06/2017 22:58

This is a TED talk from a guy who responds to a spam email. Just brilliant.

pullthecracker · 29/06/2017 22:58

PLEASE don't let the cherub expire!!!

PickAChew · 29/06/2017 22:59

You shouldn't have opened it. Now they will know it's a legit email and lots more cherubs will follow.

Bloomed · 29/06/2017 23:38

Longlostcherub would be an excellent username

LongLostCherub · 29/06/2017 23:53

LongLostCherub would be an excellent username *

Why thank you! You have now qualified for an abandoned long lost cherub of your very own, I'll even waive the $2OO delivery fee, just give me all your bank details and social security # etc..

I briefly considered going by secretaryofhomelandsecuritydepartment but it's a pita to type out and just a tad too identifying.

PossibiliTea · 29/06/2017 23:57

Seems legit.

If you are worried just ring homeland security and ask for your pal Gen Grin

ILoveDolly · 29/06/2017 23:59

9 million and a cherub? Lucky

PossibiliTea · 30/06/2017 00:00

that will be the last money you pay for anything. Ever. Because you will have no money once they clean your account out for you

GotToGetMyFingerOut · 30/06/2017 00:00

That poor poor cherubs been wasting away waiting for this day to come 😂

Bloomed · 30/06/2017 00:10

Seeingadistance · 30/06/2017 00:38

Hoping to adopt a kitten this weekend, and were thinking of a suitable name.

Cherub could be it!

SirGawain · 30/06/2017 14:42

Sir Gawain would be a better name. Far more dignified!

LuxuryWoman2017 · 30/06/2017 15:23

Gosh, you're getting so much, I'm only getting 5.6 million from High General Grace, mind you I'm not a cherub but a beloved dear one so not quite as important as a cherub I guess.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/06/2017 15:36

If you fancy having a little fun with them, there are some great ideas on here from "professional scambusters": www.419eater.com/

SirGawain · 02/07/2017 21:15

Yes, the ease with which this sort of email can be detected as a phish can be a deliberate strategy - quite interesting. Microsoft researcher Cormac Herley wrote this paper on the subject: www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/publication/why-do-nigerian-scammers-say-they-are-from-nigeria/?from=http%3A%2F%2Fresearch.microsoft.com%2Fpubs%2F167719%2Fwhyfromnigeria.pdf
