It's Tesco not Tescos!

Anyone else find it annoying when people add an 'S' on the end of shop names that don't have an 'S' on the end of them? Or AIBU?

You and Yours presenter on R4 just now called Tesco "Tescos". I can normally hear it without feeling the need to rant on AIBU but hearing it from a R4 presenter has broken the camel's back!

Bit of a 1st world issue there - it doesn't matter, have some Cake

nina2b · 29/06/2017 13:12

Surely they just use Tesco's as in Tesco's (shop)?

TheNaze73 · 29/06/2017 13:13

I agree with you OP.

And people that say Asda's?? WTAF?

It's a four letter word that they can't pronounce!

fizzytonicplease · 29/06/2017 13:15

It's The Asda in Liverpool Grin

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 29/06/2017 13:16

I refer to said shop as Tesco's emporium. I expect that's what the nice R4 person meant.

Phosphorus · 29/06/2017 13:16

It depends.

Saying ' Tesco's wine is good value' is fine.

But so is 'I'm going to Tesco's... The shop belonging to Tesco.

It's a comfortable usage, no harm is done.

user1495025590 · 29/06/2017 13:16

The 's is showing posession. The supermarket belongs to Tesco so it is Tesco's .it is the same as saying 'I am just popping as round to Mum's'

justkeepswimmingg · 29/06/2017 13:16

Feels weird to say 'just popping to Tesco' .. so I say 'just popping to Tescos'. I know it's not actually called Tescos though.. maybe I'm just common Wink.

ToddlerIs2 · 29/06/2017 13:16

I'd say "I'm going to Tesco's" same as "I'm going to Gloria's" but "I shop at Tesco" same as "I climb mountains in Scotland"

TiggyD · 29/06/2017 13:17

The plural is Tesci.

Eolian · 29/06/2017 13:18

Hmm. I'm a real pedant, but even I can't get worked up about this one. It's pretty common - Marks and Spencer's, Sainsbury's etc. It's a shop belonging to the company of that name. Hence the unnecessary but perhaps forgivable use of a possessive. Not much of a stretch to see how this came from referring Mr Brown's shop in the village to 'Brown's', surely.

LineyWimey · 29/06/2017 13:19

I'm off to my mum's for a bit

I'll be popping in to my local Wetherspoon's

I'm going to Tesco's

Works for me. And I'm a pedant.

Branleuse · 29/06/2017 13:19

who even cares?

AntiHop · 29/06/2017 13:19

Grin tiggy

humblesims · 29/06/2017 13:20

I always say Tescos and Asdas. I do it on purpose. Even though I know it to be incorrect. I dont give a fuck.

Funnyface1 · 29/06/2017 13:21

Don't use Tesco but everyone says Tasda here.

Shoxfordian · 29/06/2017 13:22

I call it Texacos so I'm a disgrace too Grin

This winds DP up as well. We've taken to saying 'Morrison' as weird way of equalising. Oh, and his step-gran calls Aldi 'Oldies' which we've taken up too. Hohoho.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 29/06/2017 13:32

I am quite flighty on this; my theory is that we automatically correct to what we naturally think sounds best. I go to Asda, that nice cheese I bought is Asda's own... I might nip to Tesco OR Tescos and anything own brand is from Tescos to avoid running the o sounds together.

I do have a friend who always says "Waitroses" though and it is really jarring to hear. So wrong! And he drops the T in the middle. It sounds bizarre and I can't say anything without looking snooty. But it's so wrong!! Arrrghhh!!!

Brahms3rdracket · 29/06/2017 13:39

Never considered it because I was too busy having a life

OrangeJulius · 29/06/2017 13:41

YANBU, this really irritates me.

NameChanger22 · 29/06/2017 13:43

I always say it, just to annoy people.

TESCOS

TheWitTank · 29/06/2017 13:47

I'm with Brahms.
Who the fuck has the time to think (or care) about this?!

BaldricksTrousers · 29/06/2017 13:49

YANBU. It annoys me as well. Sainsbury's and Morrison's are appropriate because they are a person's name. But ASDA and Tesco are not a person's name. It is not appropriate to use the possessive in that case.

For example, you wouldn't say, "I'm going to Primark's (shop)" although according to some in this thread that is correct???

Also I point out that nobody EVER says "Waitroses." Saying Tesco's or Aldi's is simply incorrect grammar that has snuck into everyday language.
