Crowd funding a power add on for my wheelchair

I am a wheelchair user and have a nice lightweight active chair which I got from wheelchair services last year.
I'm finding it more and more difficult to wheel myself around especially outside on uneven or gravel paths. I have 2 dds and I can't take them out anywhere because I'm just not able to wheel myself around.
There are power add ons that you can buy, some are power wheels, there is another type that you attach to the back of the chair and there are bike type ones too.
The problem is that they are all very expensive, all of them are around £4000 upwards!
I've thought about a powerchair but then wouldn't be able to get it in and out of the car.
I am on benefits and really don't have that sort of money and was turned down by the bank for a loan.
Someone suggested crowd funding to get one but I'm not sure if I can.
Would I be unreasonable to try?

Go for it op you've nothing to lose

Caulkheadupnorf · 28/06/2017 19:55

Can you contact some charities? My mum has MS and she was on the committee of the local group. People would contact them and ask for contributions towards stuff like this.

Agree with Glitter - why not give it a go?

Go for it, it's a shame the government can't provide a loan service for this type of equipment of they're not going to supply it on the NHS. I saw a story in the BBC this week about a woman who used crowdfunding for her chair so she could play sports and she got her chair. My MIL has MS and her electric chair was £3k if it hadn't been for a family member paying for it she would have no mobility.

OP - look up your local Round Table or Masonic Association on the internet - you can often apply for charitable awards from these organisations (I have family members in both) and they will pay part/all towards what you need.

As you have a wheelchair provided through the voucher scheme do you not also have PIP and can access Motability?

raspberrysuicide · 28/06/2017 20:31

Yes I get PIP and have a motability car

Look up the charities for your condition. Some of them are incredibly helpful.
If that doesn't work, go for the crowd-funding.

Gingernut81 · 28/06/2017 20:42

I was reading an article about exactly this the other day and how wheelchairs are a postcode lottery. A young doctor who uses a chair had researched the issue and said there are many people crowd funding for them because some nhs trusts don't offer ones that can be used by the user.

raspberrysuicide · 28/06/2017 21:38

The thing is I could probably be assessed and get a powerchair, but that would be very difficult for me to put in the car etc and I can't get a drive from wheelchair car or even a wav because the advance payment is huge.
Sadly any add ons like I need would have to be funded privately

I can't see any reason why you shouldn't try crowdfunding, raspberry. People crowd fund for all kinds of things - no one is forced to contribute - and wanting to be able to go out with your DDs is a very valid reason to ask for funding. Jonty and Caulk's advice to try some charitable bodies in your area sounds good too.

Penfold007 · 28/06/2017 22:07

Give it a go
