To think I should be paid for this

Posted in the staff room but keen for quick opinions as I'd like to sort today.
I have a new job starting next term at an independent school where my usual working days are mon-weds.
The school is having training days Weds-fri (30th Aug-1st Sep) and asks that all teachers are there regardless of usual days. I have checked and they want me there.
I expressed concern that the August days would be Unpaid as I am not paid over the summer and the hr manager got back to me saying my first day of employment is the 30th August. My recently issued and signed contract with the school says I commence employment at the school on September 1st. Am I in the wrong here or should I be paid for those days in august? They are not my usual days and as a consequence are going to cost me a large amount in childcare.

Scan your contract to them and point out the anomaly. Say you need a reply before the week's end.

just say you want a revised contract including the day.
I can't see it being a problem for them

If the school follows the teacher conditions (IE not an a academy etc) then the rules are that you do not have to attend INSET / meetings etc on your non-working days. If they want you to attend they pay you. (Parent's eves etc are different.) The conditions used to commonly be referred to as the 'burgundy book'. Not sure whether independent schools follow.

Training is useful. I would suck it up (I've had to in the past) but I am a and hate confrontation so my advice is useless

I am a mug even

I'm a finance manager at an Independent School and run payroll. At my school you would definitely be paid for this - you wouldn't even need to ask.

In my current and my last school I had to work the number of inset days pro rata. I work 3 days so I must do 3 inset days a year regardless of which days they fall on. Any more then I'm paid.

At our independent school you would be paid for this.

Helloitsme of course training is useful- I'm not the type to suck up things that I consider unfair tbh- I have to pay out 98 pounds per day in childcare to attend and I can't imagine another job where you would be expected to work for nothing.
The more people put up with this kind of thing the more it is going to happen.
As it happens they have changed my contract date and offered me two days pay for the August dates.
