To ask if there is any way to sell a car quick

Happiness2017 · 26/06/2017 10:54

I have been trying to sell my car for 3 weeks now but I have had absolutely no interest in it. It has been advertised on Gumtree, Facebook, Ebay etc (not autotrader due to the cost of selling on there). It's quite frustrating as it is worth more than I have it advertised at, and I'll be losing out if I take any less for it.

I've tried we buy any car etc, but they want something for nothing. Is there any tricks to make a car sell fast?

Could you put a link to the eBay ad?

Short MoT is likely the problem. I wouldn't touch a car with a few months MoT on it. The fact someone's getting rid of it at that stage of the MoT cycle would ring alarm bells to me. I'd be thinking the current owners have got wind that something has gone or is likely to go seriously wrong and are trying to get shut. I wouldn't spend 1k on a car in those circumstances, let alone the thick end of 3k and risk being left with a massive bill or something fit for the scrapyard.

What's the mileage? What sort of service history does it have? Have you got any documentation you can put online?

PhilODox · 26/06/2017 12:41

What about offering it through work? People often do that, as they know it's been well-looked after the short MOT won't put them off.

Dealerships will often buy second hand cars. Approach your local garages and see if they are interested.
Second option auction - be aware of fees.
Either of these options will not give you what value you want, BUT it will get you money wuickl.
Alternatively raffle your car of £5 a ticket, need x amount of sales for the car to be sold. So if you need £500, sell 1000 tickets, If you don't achieve the sales you need refund the tickets.

If you don't want to pay tax and insurance, put it as SORN, easy process, but don't think it can be parked on the road (must be on drive etc)

DP is in the motor trade - send me a link and I will get him to take a look/advise.

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 26/06/2017 13:38

Facebook selling groups, I wouldn't bother with anything else tbh.

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 26/06/2017 13:38

But the specific car selling ones, not just random pages.

GlitterRoseGold · 26/06/2017 13:53

Take it off gumtree and put it back on again as your listing may be too far down now and I know when looking for a car anything over a week or 2 I just assume it's gone or I think there must be a problem with me and that's why it's still not sold. My partner buys and sells cars solely on eBay his turnaround is roughly 9days per car but he fixes them first

GlitterRoseGold · 26/06/2017 13:54

I didn't mean eBay I meant GUMTREE

GlitterRoseGold · 26/06/2017 13:55

My dp sells cars with short mOt all the time.

Op if you do think it's the mot then why not put it through mot early.

I've sold 2 cars recently

We buy any car offered me £3500 for my car I sold it for £5000 privately the full asking price .
I use gumtree, Trade it & piston heads and it was a buyer from trade it who bought it for the full price of £5000
it was 10 years old but a top Of the range car and immaculate showroom condition .

I wrote a very descriptive add
So put the mileage 35,000 , 2 lady owners, non smokers
Full leather heated seats air con Bluetooth
Brand new 1 years MOT & service
HPI Certificate so that they could see no finance on it
I mentioned that I had all receipts for work
Professionally valeted
Lots of good clear pictures and I did a video as well

Sold it for the full price within 2 weeks

I also sold my sons fiesta within a week for 1500 it was a 2007 fiesta
We buy any car offered £600

I could have sold it 10 times over I even had people wanting to put a deposit on it and buy it unseen
I used the same advertising as above and Facebook
Again made sure the car had a brand new MOT & service on the car
Good clear pictures & and video & a professional valet

As it was my sons car I made sure that the add mentioned that it was a great car for a young driver cheap, insurance ,
Made sure that I mentioned that it had Bluetooth & a £400 stereo
( important to young kids )
Mentioned in the add that I had all receipts for work ( new clutch & water pump )

My neighbour took 3 months to sell a smart car refused to pay for advertising and it had a short MOT

I think if you want to sell it , think of who might want to buy it
With my sons I was aiming at young drivers who want a snazzy looking car with a big stereo and all the kit on it but cheap to insure but looked pretty cool to drive

With mine I was aiming for the lady drivers who wanted a low milage but top of the range car

BoysofMelody · 26/06/2017 20:20

Magpie That's pretty canny advertising, with the first car you described, I was thinking ' Wow, what car is it? I want to buy it!', the Fiesta less so as I'm not a 20 year old with a lead right foot and a bass fixation.

In both cases did you get a new MoT before the old one was up? I think that's a huge part of ensuring the op getting the price she wants, along with a well written description.

With a comparatively short MoT my first thought is 'if' it is in such great condition, if it is so well maintained, why isn't the owner prepared to spend the cost of a tank of petrol on it, to put it through the MoT? I'd be thinking there's something going on here: 'warning lights for ABS removed or taped over, terrible emissions or structural corrosion that will render it beyond economic repair.'

The fact the op hasn't had any offers, (rather than offers well below the asking price) suggest that her customer base are thinking the same.

user1486504659 · 27/06/2017 06:56

Auto trader worth the price to advertise. It will also tell you for free how much your car is worth just in case the price is to high

Cailleach666 · 27/06/2017 07:10

Yes I would put it through an early MOT.

I wouldn't buy a car with only a few months MOT.

Happiness2017 · 27/06/2017 08:44

Maybe the MOT is what is putting people off, to be honest I hadn't given the MOT a second thought.

I'm not car savvy, and I would only think about mileage and how it looked in the pictures before I bought one Blush

It got through last years MOT no problem whatsoever so I think I'll book it into my local garage, doing that would still be cheaper than renewing my insurance.

Thanks everyone for your help.

We just traded a car in and the dealer wanted a minimum 6 months MOT or they wouldn't consider. Looks like the time left on the MOT might be your problem.

19lottie82 · 27/06/2017 10:14

People will be looking for

A long MOT
Not too many owners
A full service history
2 keys
Photo of associated documents in advert
