To think some people probably over eat on fruit and veg especially when diets allow unlimited veg obviously it's healthy for you but more veg just means more calories having Pizza for dinner then adding a salad to be healthy is just adding more calories should be lesss pizza and then some veg

ragged No, Japan promotes 350g of vegetables and 200g of fruit a day.

This is like the OP on the other weight loss thread who thinks she's putting on weight due to eating too much fresh fruit...

I don't think you can overeat fruit and veg. 200 calories of lettuce and peppers provides much more food for the amount of calories than a slice of pizza would. So you'd fill up by eating more veg and less pizza so healthier. I can't see anyone eating their normal portion plus veg as they'd be overfull - the idea is to cut down the non veg bit. I'm doing SW atm, and I know it's not regarded well on here, but one thing it's good at is making you eat more fruit and veg. A third of your plate must be 'speed' aka low calorie, filling foods. Take this morning, I had 40g weetabix mini with strawberries, blueberries and raspberries rather than the big bowl full of just cereal I used to have. The idea's to use fruit/veg to replace other food and if you do that, it works. Also while a salad can be enjoyable, I'd find it really really hard to eat lots of lettuce than I would chocolate. By choosing fruit/veg I think most people's self limitation does the job for them. Plus it's so low in calorie even if you ate whole lettuces I doubt it'd be more, or even equal to, a big bar of dairy milk.

Katherine, to be fair, fruit sugar (fructose) does make you fatter than glucose.

Mostly a problem with high fructose corn syrup, though. The amounts you get in ordinary fruit probably won't affect weight much.

For optimal health you need 10 portions of fruit and vegetables a day, very hard to eat too much!

ragged · 25/06/2017 19:22

I think this is legitimate, the (in)famous Japanese spinning top food pyramid. Note it's ~5.5 portions of veg recommended plus 2 portions of fruit. Seems like beans may go in the "meat" category or veg category. (another link to establish this is true Japanese advice)

The academic articles I found seem to say that the 25% most F+Veg consuming Japanese people, eat typically 3+ portions of F+Beans+veg a week. Rather like us westerners.

Big Japanese thing is portion control. Being fat is very socially unacceptable, as well.

You're right. I'm overweight at the minute and I'm pretty sure it's because of all the carrot sticks I've been eating.

1ofthesedays · 25/06/2017 19:31

I am very confused by your post OP!

Unadon · 25/06/2017 19:40

I am Japanese and the most popular fruit and vegetable campaign is probably this one www.5aday.net/movement/about.html (website's in Japanese but there's a portion diagram somewhere on that page with the relevant numbers).

You're right about the portion sizes though, which tend to be a lot smaller than what I see here (even in an unhealthy place like McDonalds the burgers are probably about 70% the size of their western counterparts). There's also a lot more walking/biking around, fresh seafood (we used to eat sashimi for lunch every single day) instead of processed food, and yes, the social stigma associated with not being the same size as most of your classmates.

FuckYouDailyMail · 25/06/2017 19:41

Wasn't there a Hesrtbeat episode where the kid turned orange from eating an excessive amount of carrots? Misses point of thread

harderandharder2breathe · 25/06/2017 20:30

Nobody is far from eating too much veg

Eat veg first so you eat less pizza to feel full

Don't expect to lose lots of weight if you're eating a whole pizza no matter how much lettuce you have with it

SoftSheen · 25/06/2017 20:35

YABU- it's virtually impossible to eat too many vegetables. I guess you COULD eat too much fruit, but I seriously doubt this is a cause of many people being overweight.

ivykaty44 · 25/06/2017 20:37

Girl at school turned oraBge from eatiBg to many satsumers

Fibre, vegetables have lots of fibre which helps you poo, poo is good

Aquamarine1029 · 25/06/2017 20:39

Calories are calories. Eating too many calories will make you gain weight no matter where those calories come from.

StillMedusa · 25/06/2017 20:46

I craved raw carrots when I was pregnant with no 3. Ate a large bag every day. I did indeed go orange (they were worried I was developing jaundice til I asked if it could be the carrots Grin

It was also my slimmest (and probably healthiest) pregnancy!
