To think I can probably manage without a bed

Caulkheadupnorf · 25/06/2017 14:25

At the start of August I'm moving, and there is a bed there already. A friend has just moved, and we had agreed that she would have my bed when I no longer needed it as a spare. Her parents have come to stay unexpectedly so I agreed that she could have my bed early so they have somewhere to sleep.

I'm on holiday for most of July, so have 15 nights left bedless. Ive done 3 already, and the 15 is broken up with a 7 night holiday.

I'd planned to sleep on cushions on the floor, which I've done so far, but I have no idea if that is actually a ridiculous idea or whether it's fine as it's not for long.

Well...if you're fit and healthy you will be fine.

Otherwise, maybe consider borrowing a blow up bed?

mummymeister · 25/06/2017 14:28

i would buy a decent blow up mattress and mattress topper. set it up somewhere away from under- door draughts and you will be fine.

you can use them for when friends stay with you in the future. or sell them on a local to you selling site.

Caulkheadupnorf · 25/06/2017 14:28

Fit, healthy, 30. I don't always have a good sense of what is actually possible/achieveable/sensible though

Unless you already have back or other physical problems it'll be fine. People sleep on far less comfortable surfaces when they go camping for a fortnight and people across the world where raised beds and mattresses are not traditional sleeping arrangements also manage. If you become uncomfortable you can pick up a blow-up or camping mattress for a few pounds this time of year.

BandeauSally · 25/06/2017 14:30

I got a blow up bed when I was without one for about 6 weeks. It was fine.

Caulkheadupnorf · 25/06/2017 14:30

Great, thanks. I do a lot of camping and use a roll mat, so I guess an air bed is something I'll use in the future too.

Well, if you are comfortable, it's fine.
If you cannot sleep and are all sore and stiff in the morning, then maybe not so much?

You are a kind soul, Caulk Thanks

NB I am not stalking you btw, honest.

Caulkheadupnorf · 25/06/2017 14:31

PD that thought did cross my mind just then. In a humorous, you're so kind way, not in a she's stalking me way!

£10 in Asda and £5 in Tesco for an air mattress. Tesco one is narrower.

Caulkheadupnorf · 25/06/2017 14:41

Just seen that Argos have £10 ones with an attached pump. Maybe that's easier than needing to blow it up myself or buy a pump too?

putting yourself out and hurting your back.... is not good... you should have thought of yourself first x

Humptyfelldown · 25/06/2017 14:52

I've slept on the floor for 5 years. 47 yrs old, recently diagnosed with arthritis.

It's do-able. For just over 2 weeks it is not a problem. (I don't have a blow up mattress, just straight on the floor Blush .

Oldraver · 25/06/2017 15:00

Gemini Half the world sleep on the floor...have they all got bad backs as a result ? Isn't supposed to be good for you ?

jargonfreezone · 25/06/2017 15:02

If you're used to a normal bed you might find it strange/difficult to sleep on an airbed or mattress on the floor. It's cooler, noisier and draughty sometimes. I have woken up with stiff joints when I have had to do this.

Getting up from the floor in the morning is depressing too, IME.

Half the world are not on here asking for advise.... however Caulkheadupnorf who traditionally sleeps on a bed.. IS asking for advise....

Tinseleverywhere · 25/06/2017 15:05

I'd go for the air mattress too.

loveka · 25/06/2017 15:07

Get one with a pump yes. And get a not too heavy topper ( which you can use in your bed when you move ). I have done that circa week and was very comfortable!

abigamarone · 25/06/2017 15:07

I went camping a few years ago, sleeping on a self-inflating mattress was a revelation for my chronic back pain. Spent the next month sleeping on it, hardly ever had a problem since.

I might also have slept on the sunlounger cushion on the living room floor during last week's heatwave...(coolest room in the house)

LynetteScavo · 25/06/2017 18:18

I prefer self inflating camping mattresses to air beds, but I couldn't just sleep on the floor.

Do you have a child you could boot out of bed and on to an air bed? I find children are a bit like cats and will sleep anywhere Hmm

Caulkheadupnorf · 25/06/2017 18:28

I got an air bed, and spent a good hour trying to blow it up, before realising it didn't have the stopper thing in, and all the air came out. It's done now though!

Slept on the floor for 2 months after our last move- no problem (end 30s).
