Aibu to ask that If you could design your own home what would you class as essential?
I have the opportunity to extend our current house. I would like

  1. A pantry
  2. An ensuite bedroom
  3. Walk in wardrobe

We are having a bigger kitchen with a conservatory attached but DH thinks a walk in wardrobe and en suite are unnecessary and we should make an extra bedroom which would be for guests.

Oh my days! I didn't even think of a downstairs loo!
I would love a utility but am thinking of having that upstairs for all the laundry? So washing machine and tumble dryer upstairs. Has anyone done this?

YANBU to ask the question, though you should have asked in another forum.
So to ask in AIBU YABU.

Downstairs loo, 2 bathrooms (preferably 1 en-suite), somewhere to sit out in the sun, room for a study, plenty of natural light, utility/dog room massively desirable. It's great not having the washing machine whizzing away in a living area and it keeps stuff out of the kitchen leaving more storage space for things used in the kitchen.
Not essential, but I love my Quooker boiling water tap.

metalmum15 · 25/06/2017 11:18

No one wants to share a toilet next to where they have a bed

That might be your view, but plenty of other people are happy to. My toilet is several feet away from the bed, with a door that closes. I would never choose a house where I have to trot out on the landing every time I want to go to the loo, or use the shower. I prefer it in the privacy of my bedroom. I know lots of people with en-suites who wouldn't be without them.

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 25/06/2017 11:18

Ok, so not essentials but favourite luxuries?
In order of preference:

  • Well planned, large kitchen. I adore mine.
  • Good sized utility room.
  • Well planned storage space
  • Play room. Can't believe how useful it is.
  • Downstairs toilet
ludothedog · 25/06/2017 11:20

we have a nice, largish south facing garden.# the living room is at the front of the house and doesn't make use of the garden. We have plans to change the layout so that what is now the living room becomes my bedroom and what is currently a bedroom is extended into the garden with double doors. This will become the living room.

I do worry about the existing bedroom being very dark, without having access to light.

There is nothing worse than a badly designed extension where there are problems with light and dead space. I really wish we weren't restricted by the money we can spend as this has had limitations on what we can do.

Helendee · 25/06/2017 11:22

Boot room, snugs, dual aspect, dressing room.... all terms I was unaware of until I discovered 'Escape to the Country'. One couple even requested a snug for their dog! I am a bit of a pleb though by many people's standards.

fannydaggerz · 25/06/2017 11:28

3 bathrooms, utility room, large kitchen.

Fishface77 · 25/06/2017 11:38

Also I would have a pantry to reduce the number of kitchen units therefore reducing cost. It's only plaster board and shelves after all.

Thanks for your input neutrogena Hmm

For me It'd be an extra bedroom so my DSs didn't have to share. Fine now as they are wee but when they're teenagers It'd be nice for them to have their own space. I'd also like an en suite but its not essential.

AllFurCoatNoKnockers · 25/06/2017 11:44

Minimum three large rooms and at least one en suite would be ideal.
I'd also love to have a dressing room.
But on the practical side of things, plug sockets. Houses don't have enough. I'd love all of the permanent fixtures to have their own sockets and additional for things like chargers etc.

Parker231 · 25/06/2017 11:54

The best decision we made was to have a utility room built when the kitchen was extended. It has the washing machine, tumble dryer, chest freezer, sink and plenty of cupboards for coats and shoes ( and stuff that gets dumped there!). The pets get fed there and off it is a wet room and extra toilet.

MyOtherNameIsTaken · 25/06/2017 12:18

We have a utility room, ensuites to the master bedroom and guest bedroom, family bathroom and downstairs cloakroom. Huge cupboard for coats & shoes. 2 lounges, 2 studies and a large conservatory, double garage and osp for 4 cars.

TroysMammy · 25/06/2017 12:22

Your wishes would be used daily. A guest room, unless you run a b&b would be used occasionally.

When I'm in a position to have a new kitchen I will be getting a pantry put back in. Somewhere I can store my breadmaker, food processor, slow cooker, preserving equipment and all the other gubbins that make the kitchen look cluttered.

HerBluebiro · 25/06/2017 12:57

No fishface. Do not put your washing machine and tumble drier upstairs. Could you imagine the racket through the house when they are spinning round?

Just don't do it to yourself. There's a reason why flats have shared laundry rooms (downstairs ones at that)

1ofthesedays · 25/06/2017 13:14

Do not put your washing machine and tumble drier upstairs.

Depends on the house. Most houses on the continent I've seen seemed to have them upstairs in the bathrooms - clearly houses are bigger than in the UK..., it wasn't an issue.
I wouldn't risk it in a new built!

notsmartenough · 25/06/2017 13:19

My wish list includes low maintenance garden/patio area, downstairs cloakroom/shower room and ensuite.

Sgtmajormummy · 25/06/2017 13:29

Absolute necessities:
Plenty of light and air
Easy to keep clean
Free of damp
Efficient heating, mains gas etc.

Nice to have:
Separate kitchen
A toilet every 2 people
Storage and utility area.

user1andonly · 25/06/2017 14:01

I would like DH and I to have a big bedroom with ensuite each! I hate sharing with him as our body clocks are totally incompatible.

Would love a walk in larder and all sorts of storage to make the living areas tidy and uncluttered. I hate mess. DH likes things to be 'accessible' grr!

Groupie123 · 25/06/2017 14:35

Pantry is a must have.

Ensuite/walk-ins nice to have.

TheNaze73 · 25/06/2017 14:37

Ensuite bathroom
Aga
Coffee Machine

Kursk · 25/06/2017 14:41

We are also not in the UK

Privacy: at least a mile from the nearest neighbor.

Basement
At least one wood stove- should be the primary source of heat and hot water
Garage

HolyGhost · 25/06/2017 14:43

A priest hole and a ha-ha.

user1494187262 · 25/06/2017 14:46
  1. ensuite
  2. usable, acsessable, outside space
  3. table in the kitchen
  4. high ceilings
flownthecoopkiwi · 25/06/2017 15:53

We are now suffering in poverty, but so happy to now have 4 big bedrooms, play room, utility and a downstairs loo we can convert into a good sized wet room.

No interest in an ensuite.
