I have a new car!! WAHOO!!

But I feel so guilty to get rid of my old one. Like I have a personal attachment. "She" was my first car and has served me well but she is old and needs so much work doing which is worth more than the car itself. I brought a new one today and I feel so guilty.

My new car is on the drive. Full clean and service. NIce, shines and smug.

OLd car is on the road looking so sad.

My OH thinks I am weird for feeling so strongly about a car however it is only worth scrap as it is very old and falling apart.

I was just wondering is it just me or do other people ever feel like this? They have names too!!

Deffo NBW.

I keep paying more to fix my old workhorse than it's worth.
The local garage owner keeps begging me to scrap it, even though it's paying for his holidays. Grin
It's FINE.
I can't afford to buy a good/better/newer model and for the age he's a beautiful drive.

I'm on first name terms with the folks in the garage now.
They tell me if it's something I can do myself for cheaper.
I'm looking for a new car, but have somewhere I can keep the old boy for emergencies.

Want2beme, I'm sorry to hear that. I'm sure you're old Renault had a good life though

LottaHogs · 25/06/2017 06:49

YANBW
I've been having to look to the left when I go in the garage because Old Kettle is sat on the floor on the right hand side, next to the bucket of hard plastic items which will go to the recycling centre at some point.
New Kettle is shiny, quiet and boils quickly, but I feel slightly unfaithful when I use him.
I have shed tears when driving away from a garage in a new car when Old Car is sat in their car park watching me leave.

I sobbed when I sold Wayne the Ka. That car served me well. I've never felt the same about another car since.

PhoenixJasmine · 25/06/2017 08:17

Wayne (the) Ka, hehehehehe

I dated a chap called Wayne once, when his Mum remarried he was pressured to change his surname to his stepfather's to 'match' the rest of the family. There's a myriad of reasons why that's not a good idea, but the fact his stepdad was Mr Kerr was uppermost!

I had a car stolen and torched. I had a fleeting moment of sadness thinking about it in a strange place engulfed in flames.

I looked into those charity scrapping companies when I scrapped mine. I decided it was better to go through a normal scrapper then donate the money directly and let the charity claim gift aid on the donation. That way the charity gets an extra 25%.

HungerOfThePine · 25/06/2017 20:23

I'm planning on getting rid of my first car soon as it's just too old now to be worth keeping, I think I will be a little sad as I have some lovely sentimental memories in that car and in a new one I won't feel it anymore.
I'm happy to be weird about it.

Urglewurgle · 25/06/2017 20:26

YANBW... I felt so guilty leaving my car on the drive by himself while we went away that I put a stuffed toy in the back seat. Blush

We used to like in flats with garage parking so he was never alone.

FooFighter99 · 25/06/2017 20:31

YANBU at all, my DD(5) still asks when Betsy (our old car) is coming back because she misses her 😩 But poor Betsy would never have passed another MOT so we had to buy Rusty instead. Weird how we get attached to inanimate objects isn't it, but you're definitely not alone

Rowgtfc72 · 25/06/2017 20:56

Vicky the vectra and Katy the corsa are both 18 and have needed a lot of tlc over the last couple of years but are going nowhere!
Dd was named lucy after the original corsa. Was very upset when that car was sold.Sad

My car is ancient and I will be replacing it soon. I mentioned this to ds1's new GF and she said, "Oh, that's sad!" I agreed with her although ds1 thought we were bonkers. I like the girl already!

isittheholidaysyet · 25/06/2017 21:27

My car just got written off.
(Minor bump, no-one hurt, old car)

But that car was perfect for us and irreplaceable.
I cried when I went to empty my stuff out of it. Tbh I did think I was being weird, but you are not alone.

Now I have to have a stupid people carrier.

Whiterabbitears · 25/06/2017 23:34

I do the same OP! I name cars and give them personalities Blush when I sold my first car to buy a brand new one I cried my eyes out and said sorry to her! It is weird but hey its OK we are not hurting anyone!

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 26/06/2017 17:33

I cried when dh wrote off my car. It was years ago, he'd borrowed it for work and got hit head on by some prat overtaking on a blind bend. He was fine thank god but when I saw the star of the mangled car in the garage the next day I burst into tears. I think it was a combination of the state of my lovely little car and the thought of what could have happened.
