To pay a man, or is that unspeakably lazy

Need to decorate DS bedroom. Have had the new furniture, bed, carpet, delivered/organised ages ago and had a quote for wallpapering and painting, with the intention of stripping it myself.

Started and just can't face it? Just seems like such a mammoth task. It's painted over, so not coming off great.

Do painters and decorators resent being asked to strip wallpaper? I feel bad asking him to do that too, even though obviously I'd have to pay for it.

Am I lazy cow??

YABVU to say 'a man' when you mean 'a decorator', I mean really, this is how stereotypes are constructed.

Otherwise, why not - contribute to local economy an all that.

Sparklingbrook · 24/06/2017 21:38

You could pay a woman

Except from what the OP says the person that has done the quote and she is going to ask is a man. Confused

Note use of 'him'.

Oh FFS. Read my posts. I have already asked a man! I'm simply going to ask something extra of the person who already quoted me.

May I just say, this isn't the thread I thought it might be from the title!!!

If you can afford it, definitely go for it. Although, you might find that a handyman service might be less expensive and possibly more available than a decorator (if it's just a guy to come & strip that you're after)

Oops... sorry, back in the gutter

Except that of course can be seen as willfully ignoring the prevalent concept of tradesperson = men, isn't it? 'Getting a man in' - I hate this ridiculous expression, as if a putty knife has ever been penis operated.

PenguinOfDoom · 24/06/2017 21:44

If you have the money then you should do it. They will do a better job in half the time and you can get on and do other stuff.

Sparklingbrook · 24/06/2017 21:51

The expression 'getting a man in' is fine. I don't know any female oven cleaners locally so I get a man in to do mine. And OP has already got a man in anyway. Grin

Texted the decorator on Friday, he's read my message and not replied. I guess he's not up for stripping the walls then! Confused

Im a lone parent and not exactly rolling in cash but i often pay for jobs like this as i simply dont have the time and inclination after working all week and trying to keep my house...garden and kids under control.

Vereesa · 03/07/2017 12:42

I've always been under the impression that this is part of their job!
