To think suncreams aren't what they seem

I'm abroad...bought nivea and Amber solair creams along with an Aldi one. On studying the packets the Amber solair had 3 star uva as did the nivea. The Aldi has 5 stars. How can these big brand sun creams not have as good protection as Aldi?

Probably all made by the same company anyway.
If you wanted a high factor why didn't you just buy one?

Poisongirl81 · 24/06/2017 11:17

I bought high factors I'm saying the uva star rating is different.

I watched a documentary and it seemed supermarket ones did do better than a lot of branded ones.

DonaldStott · 24/06/2017 11:24

All the same stuff. Just probably packaged differently and people are daft enough to pay £££s for named brands

Louiselouie0890 · 24/06/2017 11:27

I always buy the aldi one never had any problems

FuzzyOwl · 24/06/2017 11:30

I bought some Sainsbury's own basic brand once in an emergency that was supposed to be factor 15. It was the best sunblock I've ever found or used.

sufficatedsue · 24/06/2017 11:56

Do Aldi do a sensitive skin one? Or is their standard one pretty good even with SS?

LiveLongAndProspero · 24/06/2017 11:57

They are exactly as they seem, when you bother to read the pack. They are what they say they are, the problem is people just assume.

Yes, white tube specially for babies, its excellent.

Decsbetterhalf · 24/06/2017 12:01

Yep UVA is most important. Tesco Sensitive skin factor 50 has lasted DS 3 all week in plus 30 degrees and not burned once.

dementedpixie · 24/06/2017 12:05

I always looked the star rating too and the own brand makes all tend to have a better UVA rating than the branded ones which is a bit crap

gabsdot · 24/06/2017 12:12

We used the Lidl sunscreen on our holiday in early June.
It's excellent and very affordable. The alovera aftersun is lovely too.

This is the one Sue.

ghostyslovesheets · 24/06/2017 13:06

all the cheap supermarket ones have 5*'s for UVA - expensive brands are lower - I stick to Aldi or Morrisions

dementedpixie · 24/06/2017 13:08

I have bought some nivea 4 star stuff as it's in a handy 300ml trigger spray bottle. Have some aldi stuff too that's 5 star

Because far too many people are brainwashed by the notion 'expensive and branded is best' and 'cheap supermarket own brand is rubbish' without trying for themselves or reading the packaging.

You only have to watch a few episodes of Eat/Shop Well for Less to discover that once all the branding is taken away people often prefer a cheaper/own brand version or can't tell 'their' brand from a cheaper one time and time again even if they were one of those people who would only buy Nivea/Heinz/high end beauty products.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/06/2017 14:28

I have pale skin that burns easily and holiday in the Meditteranean. I only use Aldi/Asda/Morrisons etc sunscreen and never burn.

Main thing is that you apply enough and reapply after swimming etc.

ObviousChild · 24/06/2017 15:35

I think it's to do with the consistency of the cream. To get high UVA protection it needs to be quite a thick, which is fine for cheaper brands. But more expensive brands tend to have other selling features, such as quick absorbing or spray bottles, which you can't do with a thicker cream.

Depends on your priorities really. If you use one a lower UVA rating, you need to apply it more frequently.

dementedpixie · 24/06/2017 15:52

Aldi, Morrisons, etc all do spray/trigger versions too and still manage to have a high UVA rating so I don't agree with that

ShelaghTurner · 24/06/2017 16:55

Taking note. I still burn even with cream and always buy the expensive ones. Heading to Aldi...

ASDismynormality · 24/06/2017 17:01

The best I have found is Malibu clear all day protection It doesn't feel greasy or sticky, we just spray it on and it gives really good protection. I buy a large bottle in Savers for £5, feelsich more expensive.
