To move energy supplier?

Charlie97 · 24/06/2017 09:05

Received a bill from energy supplier, it state my normal direct debit was moving from £100 per month to £189.

It was for dual energy, one reading was "read" the other estimated. I've been with supplier 10+ years. So they should be able to fairly easily estimate usage. One DS moved out but other DS partner always here, so no change in number of people.

So I phoned in with core t reading, which was not dissimilar to estimate.

I said £89 which is an 89% increase with no change in circumstances seems high!

The advisor said yes it is, it only needs to raise to £110.

I'm like Hmm! That could've given people sleepless nights worrying about the increase.

The whole thing seems disingenuous by the provider, but are they all the same?

We're with first utility-I send a meter reading every month and they adjust my payments accordingly. It's worked well so far for us and there's an app to submit the readings and monitor your account.

Charlie97 · 24/06/2017 09:11

Ohh Super, I'll get onto that! I like an app! Smile

They all do it, mine was doubled and I switched and am due back 100s that hasn't arrived back yet...

British gas did similar to me though not such a big rise. I couldn't figure it out as it was in the winter and the new direct debit amount was about the same as the usage for february so was obviously going to be too much over the year. I didn't phone them but I did change my supplier to a far cheaper deal.

Charlie97 · 24/06/2017 09:15

Oh brexit don't tell me that! Shock

You've been with the same provider for 10 years?! Shock

We switch every year, we always "save" money! (This year it went up but not as much as it would have gone up if we didn't switch).

Honestly try uSwitch, they sort it all out for you and it only takes 10 minutes. I think you'll be surprised how much you can save!

Falconhoof1 · 24/06/2017 09:18

I also had a smart meter with British gas so there should have been no estimation needed.

Charlie97 · 24/06/2017 09:19

Purple, I'll do that! Thank you

Like car and house insurance, you really should try and switch supplier each year for the cheapest deals. There are loads of comparison sites to do it and it's (providing the companies don't screw it up) pretty simple.
I switched from Scottish Power to OVO and my usage and costs have dropped significantly. Perhaps it's more to do with the fact that I can see my daily usage on an app on my phone and it's prompted me to try and knock it down. I saved £1 a day just by turning the tv and xboxes off at the plug at night! That's it and I save up to £365 a year!

valeriej43 · 24/06/2017 09:41

I am slso with first utility, i always overpay in case i need to use more gas especially in winter, thay are brilliant
I usually change suppliers every 2 years approx, but depends on circumstance really,my payments were only £55 a month, so because i paid extra i got almost £500 back at the end of contract
I live in a 3 bed house usually alone, but have had sons coming back sometimes and have one here just now, but i have radiators on in all rooms in winter, although very low, just to keep rooms aired,
When EON had the over 60s plan on staywarm, i was still being charged over £100 a month and when that ended was put up to £149 a month ,thats when i staqrted switching
Cant recommend First Utility enough, bought new staircarpet and other things with rebate, last year got just under £400 rebate

specialsubject · 24/06/2017 09:46

You've missed the cheap times as all suppliers have raised unit prices between 30 and 50%. However take a good look at your unit price and standing charge and run a comparison to see if you can pay less.

Ignore the two cons, tariff comparison rate and the purported savings. A quick spreadsheet or sums will tell you the actual savings.

I had the opposite problem with Scottish power. They kept reducing my payment even though I wasn't in credit. I'd go online and increase it and within a couple of months they'd take it back down again. Realised I was £500 in debit recently despite my attempts to stay in credit and switched. New provider should save me approx £140 per year too.

mymatemarmite · 24/06/2017 09:55

I recently switched to Sainsbury's energy. Cheaper than my last supplier plus I received a £100 gift card to spend indoors!

Usernamegone · 24/06/2017 09:57

Ring up your energy supplier and ask them how much electricity and gas you use. Then go to uswitch and put these figures in. Voila a list of cheaper deals will appear! Most of the deals you can switch to online and it couldn't be easier.

Bumbumtaloo · 24/06/2017 10:03

I'm with Eon and this is the second year I have stayed with them. When my first contract was up they stayed the cheapest for us. My direct debit has just gone up from £62 to £84pcm but I expect that to go down again after the summer. There are 4 of us in the house, 2 of us 24/7. They also allow you to go from tariff to tariff with them.

I also used uswitch.

Bumbumtaloo · 24/06/2017 10:04

Ugh also meant to say they have an app for you to check your usage, payments etc.

Silverstreaks · 24/06/2017 10:16

We moved recently, the tariff we inherited was ridiculous. We've just switched to The Big Deal and it's going to save us £140 a month. £140 a month!!!
Definitely switch.

valeriej43 · 24/06/2017 11:35

I wouldnt go back to EON for anything, my sister has been with them for years, also on the Staywarm scheme
She pays about £85 a month,or did until recently, she is in a 2 bed bungalow, her partner died 2 years ago, they have never offered her a rebate, just lowered her payments , i keep telling her she should switch, but she doesnt have the internet although her daughter does
Also advised her to get a water meter put in, but she takes more notice of her neighbours than me,who say they regret it
My water bill is much less and i use a lot

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 24/06/2017 11:38

I moved when a company did similar. I wasn't going to phone and be charged for the call so moved.
