Basically it locates the phones of everybody on snapchat, down to the exact house
so can be used to find where children are asleep (with their phones by their beds)
or to see if people are away from home.

Has all sorts of safeguarding / crime issues and was clearly thought up by childless geeks ....

Not everyone has an iPhone Dancer Smile

DD changed her privacy settings to ghost straight away, but I think some of her peers like others to know that they have a massively busy social life and are out and about a lot. We have had a letter from school about Snapchat Map and advisde to suggest to our children that they change their settings to ghost.

Advised - I can spell really.

Dancergirl · 11/07/2017 14:54

Yes I know that lonicera but I was pointing out that it is hardly new technology that warrants such hand-wringing.

LoniceraJaponica · 11/07/2017 15:07

Isn't it because it is the default setting in Snapchat, and it has caught people unaware? I don't know anything about iPhones, but don't you have to set it for it to be traced?

And, yes, if people don't have iPhones they won't be familiar with the idea.

I still don't really understand the issue. My dds are only on Snapchat with friends, what's the big deal if their friends know where they are??

It's scary. Even if kids just have their friends on there, it can open the door to all sorts of issues such as bullying, exclusion from friendship groups etc. And of course it encourages creepy stalky behaviour.

Glad my dd's are far too young to even know about SnapChat, but I do worry what the future holds for them.

eyebrowsonfleek · 17/07/2017 15:03

Dancergirl- my dd has it off because she doesn't want people who are not close to her knowing where she lives. She doesn't want drama based on who she hangs/does not hang around with. She leaves the house on her own sometimes and doesn't need people to know she's out and about. She doesn't do that "Look At Me !" thing where you check into places visited, post where you work etc. I think that's smart really.

Dd turned my off telling me it was for my good. 😂

YANBU and thank you OP this has reminded me to switch off mine!

Unfortunately for this to be true, you would have to remove yourself completely from social media.
