Going to my late mils funeral on Tuesday, I have never been to the funeral of someone so close so I am buying a new dress etc what style should I go for as the dil to look nice without looking like I've tried to hard if that makes sense. I just don't want to upset anyone!

Just buy a plain black dress or a black suit

OuchBollocks · 23/06/2017 09:22

The Boden casual jersey dress is,despite the name, fairly smart and very flattering.

Agree with Shoxfordian. A plain black dress would be ideal. You want to look smart, as though you have made an effort, but not glam as though you are going to a party.

If black isn't your thing, then navy or grey is quite acceptable or - at a push, mind - something like a summer dress with a pattern if you then wear a black or navy jacket over it.

Shoulders covered and atleast knee length skirt/dress and no cleavage on show. I went to a funeral once where the immediate family where dressed for a night out. Cleavage on show and almost knickers in view as the hemlines were so short. The poor vicar didn't know where to look.

Just dress as if you're going to an interview, plain but smart.

Sorry for your loss OP

The Boden dress OuchBollocks suggests would be fine, although for a funeral I would wear proper shoes and, dare I say it, sheer tights with it (rather than the summer shoes on the model).

Have you asked if theres a dress code? I went to Grandads funeral recently dressed in navy and black only to find the immediate family (parents, aunts, uncles) all dressed in yellow. They assumed everyone knew it was to be a celebration of life and dress in his favourite colour, I assumed it was black/blue/grey because he was an older generation.

I would politely ask if theres a favourite colour you could wear of the deceased and then team it with black/navy skirt/trousers.
