To have weird associations?

Fully prepared to be told I'm the only one... But does anyone else have mental images / memories / associations come to mind at strange times?

For example, whenever I chop up broccoli, I'm reminded of a scene from a book I read as a teen. There is NO mention of chopping or broccoli in that scene! But it happens every time. Please tell me I'm not the only one?!

Yep. Whenever I chop up chicken, I think of the HR manager at one of my old jobs.

Also whenever I spoon out coffee I think of another former colleague and her office Confused

I have this with names Blush
Almost every single name will trigger an object, smell, weather or more commonly a food etc when spoken.

E.g. Karen = sprouts
Teresa = morello cherries
David = aviator sunglasses
John = wrigleys doublemint
Bill = vinegar
Clare = toffees
Kelly = cream soda
Suzanne = tomato soup

I have no reasoning or memory to associate these things, indeed some names I'd never heard but instantly associated them with something.

I need help don't I! Grin

Feral that actually sounds quite a handy way of remembering names. Are you good at that?

Tigresswoods · 22/06/2017 23:31

I have this & totally get you OP. I've often wondered if it is A Thing.

FeralBeryl · 22/06/2017 23:33

Assburgers (amazing name btw Wink) strangely not especially, no haha.
I've never met anyone in RL with anything similar and no one can understand what I mean. It makes more sense Hmm written down

I am so glad other people get this!! Every time I chop an onion I think of going to a friend's wedding years ago (no connection to onions!) And every time I changed a nappy I thought of one of my dad's friends from years ago and a train station I used to live near. I tried lots of times to Google the phenomenon but couldn't find anything, thought it was just me!

It's called anchoring. It happens naturally, or can be used/misused by psychologists, fake mediums, pick-up artists etc..or you can use it yourself for your own purposes

Used for studying too - perfume or food to stir memory

Sam Winchester from Supernatural = cookies and cream ice cream. I have plenty of others but this is my most treasured.

TenForward82 · 23/06/2017 06:25

It seems food is a big trigger, wonder why? Confused

I was thinking about this the other day when I was ironing (a rare occurrence) and realised that whenever I iron I am reminded of my great nanna's house, and she died aged 100 in 1989.

The brain is such a weird thing.
