Frankish magic football. He reads these to himself at bedtime and it's really helping his reading. He also enjoys David Williams and Ronald Dahl but prefers me to read them to him.
Could anyone recommend some more books he may enjoy reading by himself? Especially if they are football ones!

My 8 year old loved Frankie's magic football boots he also enjoys Beast Quest, Anthony Horowitz books, David Williams and Diary of a Wimpy Kid - he has even started writing a diary!

I second Jeremy Strong, very funny! Also, I just remembered Joe Craig, another author who came to school and who the kids loved. He writes the Jimmy Coates books, about a schoolboy spy. They might be a little difficult for an 8 year old, but worth a try maybe?

DramaInPyjamas · 22/06/2017 20:03

My son enjoyed the Mr Gum books at that age, similar to David Walliams stuff

CorbynsBumFlannel · 22/06/2017 20:05

My 7yo is a big fan of the Frankie's Magic Football books and aside from the ones mentioned he also loves the Tom Gates books (very similar to Wimpy Kid), Horrid Henry, the Horrible Histories/Science/Geography books and a couple of kids books we've got by David Badiel. He's also got some kids biographies of Lionel Messi, Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney that he's quite enjoyed.

CorbynsBumFlannel · 22/06/2017 20:07

The choose your own adventure books always go down well too.

timtam23 · 22/06/2017 20:09

Jeremy Strong also very popular in our house. 9 yr old DS1 is reading the "Tom Gates" series by Liz pinchon (I think?!) He loves these and DS2 has started them as well (he's 7). Ciaran Murtagh has a series of books called Dinoball, Dinopants and Dinopoo, I found them a bit silly but the DSs loved them (and Dinoball is sort of football-based)

MaddeningtheUnhelpful · 22/06/2017 20:20

Jamie Johnson. My football mad son loves them

MaddeningtheUnhelpful · 22/06/2017 20:21

oh Captain Underpants too! Those books get belly laughs here

turkeyboots · 22/06/2017 20:23

My 7 and 10 yr olds enjoyed the Timmy Failure books. And the Stick Dog series.

WellTidy · 22/06/2017 20:27

Chris Hoy has a few books for this age group which are cycling based

13th storey treehouse series are fab

Diary of a wimpy kid series

Tom Gates series

Michael Morpurgo is a fab author. We started with shorter books of his like The Butterfly Lion

BeBesideTheSea · 22/06/2017 20:28

All the 7yr old boys in my son's class adore Beast Quest. The library has to ration them so they go round! Plus there seem to be eleventy billion of them.

Pibplob · 22/06/2017 20:47

Wow, thanks so much everyone! Loads of recommendations. I think we will have to visit the library as otherwise it will become very expensive 😂

Thanks so much!

A few more:

Oliver Moon series - all standalone chapter books, quite easy reads but sometimes it is nice for them to read something unchallenging

The owl who was afraid of the dark series. There is a bumper book if these which is much cheaper than buying them individually

The racehorse who wouldn't gallop, by Clare balding is nice

imnot · 22/06/2017 21:20

Spydog series is brilliant, my son loved it

SomethingPhishy · 22/06/2017 21:36

My almost 7 year old DS loved Frankies magic football, it was his first book collection. Since then he has read the 'Stink' collection by Megan Mcdonald (Stink is the brother of Judy Moody), all the Diary of a wimpy kid, Horrid Henry & currently on Roald Dahl collection.

Supersoaryflappypigeon · 22/06/2017 21:38

Yes please visit your library!! spotthelibrarian

GeekyWombat · 22/06/2017 21:45

My godson loves the Charlie Fry books. They're about a schoolboy footballer with Cystic Fibrosis (which is of wider family interest for him, but he assures me the football is the best bit!)

There are four books so far so a nice meaty series if your DS gets into them.

sufficatedsue · 22/06/2017 21:49

DS has loved the Tom Gates books! He's moving onto the wimpy kids books now

Nelly5678 · 22/06/2017 22:06

Ronald Dahl. Seriously?

MargotLovedTom1 · 22/06/2017 22:09

My three sons and all their class mates have loved the Monster and Chips books.

Author info on Amazon

TinklyLittleLaugh · 22/06/2017 22:23

How about non fiction OP? I spent a lot of time coaxing DS1 to read stories, when really, he was much keener on facts at that age.

ElBandito · 22/06/2017 23:03

Wilf the Mighty Worrier Saves the World by Georgia Pritchett (Author)
David Baddiel kids books are good
Treehouse books
If he is all about the football he may like some non-fiction www.amazon.co.uk/Neymar-Wizard-Michael-Part-ebook/dp/B00M0R5KLU/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1498168889&sr=1-1&keywords=Children%27s+football&tag=mumsnetforum-21
