to take my six year old to Penn & Teller?

My friend bought tickets for DH & I, and he and our other friend to see this show.. the other friend now can't go and original friend suggested we bring DD. We've been making an effort to take her to lots of theatre lately, and she's great and sits through musicals and enjoys them fine... we've seen Matilda, Cirque Du Soleil, School of Rock, Lion King, Aladdin & Wicked with her so far this year and so our friend thought it might be another good programme to add to her collection. But DH isn't sure it's age appropriate... and after events in recent weeks, doesn't want me to take her on the train which is ridiculous Hmm

I know it's not a musical of a story she knows, but it's just a magic show right? Smile

I'm not sure - can you find a review?
It's not quite Paul Daniels and Debbie Magee Saturday tea time magic.
We saw them in Vegas and I don't remember there being any children - some of the trucks are quite long and you need to follow what's going on for about 20minutes.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 22/06/2017 08:03

I can only really find that they don't allow under 5's.... but that doesn't really tell me about the show. I read some reviews of the Vegas show where people say it's a family show, but then there's a common sense media saying Penn & Teller Fool Us that used to be on tv was for 12 and up...

Not sure now!

They're a lot less gruesome than they were in the 90s. There are a couple of slightly gory bits in the current show. They do the SNL snake trick and another trick where Teller bleeds. There were primary school aged kids at the show earlier this week but I'm not sure there were many as young as six.
The language isn't outrageous no fucks etc but I think there were a couple of ass damn etc.
It's an incredible show not sure personally if I'd go with a six year old as it isn't pitched as a family/kids show but it depends on your views and the child I guess.

steppemum · 22/06/2017 08:53

I love magic shows and allmy kids would love Penn and Teller, they love them on TV.
So I came on to say yes do it, she will love it, but having seen what SexLube says about the age appropriateness of the tricks I am not sure.

On a side note - can I ask where they are on? I have some theatre vouchers and would LOVE to see this

PoppyTree · 22/06/2017 08:54

I think 6 is a bit young for Penn and Teller.

AlbusPercival · 22/06/2017 08:56

Fool us is on Netflix if you want to have a look?

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 22/06/2017 09:02

They're on at the Hammersmith apollo...

Thanks, I'll have a look Smile

I've seen their Vegas show and while there wasn't anything to scare the horses it takes some concentration to follow it.

SquatBetty · 22/06/2017 10:23

Penn and Teller are brilliant but I saw them some years ago and there were a few tricks where it looked like they were about to give themselves terrible injuries - could you warn your DD in advance that there may be some 'yucky' bits?

Dadstheworld · 22/06/2017 10:26

A lot of their current bits are a bit wordy/arty. I'd be concerned that it would hold a 6 year olds attention.

A great show though.

RockNRollNerd · 22/06/2017 10:48

I'd agree that it is very wordy in places. A big part of their act is the comedy and the narrative, a long bit about how governments use magic for example and I would imagine even though the trick itself is easy to follow the preamble and the narration would go way over a six year olds head. The finale is also very long on narrative too now I think about it. On balance I suspect six is a bit young perhaps for the current show...

weaselwomble · 22/06/2017 13:10

Completely agree with Dadstheworld. Some might be quite boring for a child and the tricks IMO don't have massive wow factor for a child if that makes sense. One trick also shows a rabbit going through a wood chipper which might be a bit much for a six year old? And the snake trick as another poster said. I guess it depends on how good your child is at accepting something as fake (can't think how to describe that at all!).

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 22/06/2017 19:42

Well..: we are there! Wish me luck! I watched Fool Us and she loved it!

Some of there stuff is political too though I am sure that would go over their heads.

INeedANameChange · 23/06/2017 08:28

How did it go?

I used to love the gruesome stuff in the 90s - I'd probably have been 10+ but I thought it was so clever. They bore me a bit now they've gone all mainstream Grin

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 23/06/2017 09:20

She loved it! She went to school to tell all her friends about the fish trick :)
