All I read about on here is the name Maddie!!!!!

Can someone please explain to me why a name that starts with Mad is appealing!?

I would hazard a guess that most sane and rational people can differentiate between a mental condition and any other word at all that contains the three letters of that condition.

I feel the same but presumably other people aren't reminded of the word Mad

Has it become popular again? Madeleine was my Grandmother's name so I love it . . . although she would have been horrified if anyone dared call her Maddie Grin

I had a friend called Ufuk. Weird initially, but there it is.

I love ❤️ Madeleine but in my part of the world, it's too difficult to detach the name Maddie from it's pejorative use you're a maddy.

I guess if you're not used to hearing it used that way, it's fine. Smile

Not a fan of the name personally.................. for reasons I won't go into.

I am often on the baby naming threads, there have only been two on the name Maddie I can think of recently. So it really can't be all you read about on here, surely?! Grin

Because it's a beautiful name Confused. It's short for Madeline/aine/eine which is gorgeous. Genuinely cannot see the issue.

If you are being that silly about names surely almost all of them are off the cards? Can't use Amanda because it has 'man' in it; Benedict because there's a 'dic' in there; Jessica because there is 'sic'.

It's my daughter's name, (Madeleine shortened to Maddie) what's wrong with it? In over 17 years she has never once been called 'mad' in the pejorative sense because of it, even though one of our family shortened versions is Mad or Mads.
There are a few Maddie or Maddys in her school, most are shortened from Madison these days.

I also don't get the repeated mentions and threads about the absolute love for the name. Madeleine or Maddison, or Maddie. Honestly it will forever bring Madeline McCann to the forefront of my mind, the poor soul.

I don't understand why about 50% of popular names are popular.
But I think that days more about me than anything else.

I think the sound is pleasing??
I don't like Elilie because it makes me think of Smelly. But I get that most people don't feel the same .

I'm guessing I'm the only one who read Swish of the Curtain as a child? Maddie to me will always be the pesky little sister :D

Because (a) most people wouldn't associate the name "Maddy" with being "mad" and (b) who actually still refers to mental health problems/anger as "being mad"

Me too, Girl! I love the book so much my daughter has the middle name Madeleine. 😀 only because DH vetoed Lynette as too old-fashioned!!

Madeleine McCann is the first thing I think of so it would be very odd indeed for me too name my child that. Other people obviously have different connotations.

It's my daughters name too, she loves it.
I don't think she had ever had any negative comments as far as I know.
She is 25 and it really suits her.
You could say the same thing about Jessica and Holly. Or Ben.
