Birthday Cake

greendiary · 21/06/2017 14:55

So it was a colleagues birthday a few days ago (a big one) so thought we'd be nice and buy him a cake and flowers when she returned today.

He declared she was taking the cake home and not sharing it (as intended).

AIBU to think he's entitled and greedy?

Cut it now and share it.... cheeky git! Tight arse too

RainbowJack · 21/06/2017 15:04

So, was it a he or she?

Pinkheart5912 · 21/06/2017 15:07

I think he/she is fine to take the cake home tbh, presumably the cake was brought for the birthday person and not a gift for the office. I couldn't get worked up over it

XJerseyGirlX · 21/06/2017 15:12

I think its really cheeky TBH, I would go and cut a huge slice and say
" I seriously thought you were joking about not sharing it" and future purchases are given with a note saying "only to be consumed on the premises" lol

UrsulaPandress · 21/06/2017 15:13

Tight as the proverbial.

What sort of cake?

greendiary · 21/06/2017 15:14

Sorry - it's a he!

Yeah in hindsight we should have kept it aside and said we would cut it and give out to everyone.

He's known for being downright rude tbh. I thought I'd be nice to him - won't be doing that again in a hurry.

OP posts:
RainbowJack · 21/06/2017 15:18

Surely if you bought the cake for him then it's his to do with as he pleases.

You don't buy someone something then put provisos on it.

You and your colleagues sound like greedy guts to me. If you want cake, you should have have bought cake for your own damn selves.

Wineandrosesagain · 21/06/2017 15:22

How very odd. Birthday cakes are for sharing and that seems very tight to refuse to share it with the kind colleagues who bought it. I can imagine that pretty much deflated the occasion! I think he is tight and/or socially inept.

Wineandrosesagain · 21/06/2017 15:23

And they don't sound like greedy guts - sharing a birthday cake at work is perfectly normal.

ScarlettFreestone · 21/06/2017 15:23

Well technically you bought it as a gift so it's his to do with as he pleases, extremely odd not to cut it in the office and take the leftovers home though.

I guess you won't buy him a cake next year...

squoosh · 21/06/2017 15:26

Outrageous.

This contravenes ALL legislation pertaining to Work Based Cake Purchasing and Consumption laws.

I hope he drops it on his journey home and it's then immediately set upon by a million ants and blue bottles.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 21/06/2017 15:26

You gave it to him as a gift, if he doesn't want to share, he doesn't have to.
You or anyone else would be incredibly unreasonable to cut in to it and eat any.

squoosh · 21/06/2017 15:28

Sit on it OP! Let your bumcheek imprint inform him of your displeasure.

AdaColeman · 21/06/2017 15:30

As the Birthday Boy, it should have been him providing the cake, that's the usual office convention.

FakePlasticTeaLeaves · 21/06/2017 15:33

As the Birthday Boy, it should have been him providing the cake, that's the usual office convention. I know this is sometimes the case, but all the offices I've worked in we do it the other way round and by cake and a spread for the birthday boy/girl. This is financed by the company, so no way would anyone be expected to take it home.

Feels a bit mean for him to take and not share, but I guess if that's what he wants to do...

BusterGonad · 21/06/2017 15:33

If it was my birthday and my work got me a cake and I said "oh thanks I'll take that home" they'd think I was a right weirdo.
All those people that think it's normal must be the type to take cakes home themselves. What utterly odd behavior!

listentobirdsong · 21/06/2017 15:37

I would find that pretty odd, but probably funny too. I think some people are completely oblivious.

WhiskeySourpuss · 21/06/2017 15:39

I'm a bit Hmm at this whole situation...

At my work the boys are well aware that irrespective of who's birthday it is the cake is really for me & the other girl in the office - one of the boys doesn't even like cake & we still get one for "his" birthday - I'd love to see any of them try to get away with shite like taking it home

ILookedintheWater · 21/06/2017 15:44

Is someone stealing the loo roll and blue pens? It's this colleague.
