Help! There must be some way to decrease clothes without an iron - surely?!

My iron is bust. I hoped it was just a fuse but it's broken.

I need to look smart tomorrow morning. I have two jersey material (Monsoon) dresses I could wear. Both need ironing.

Help! What can I do?

I know the shower trick - but I don't have a shower. I do have a bath but our heating & hot water is playing up - if you turn one on, they both come on. I can't bear the thought of the heat on in this temperature!

Any ideas oh wise MNers?!

Boil water in a large pan and hold the dress over it in sections while holding it smooth.

utterchaos · 21/06/2017 00:20

Didyoumeantobesorude1 will that work?!

How early in the morning would you need to iron your dress?

Too early to ask a neighbour?

utterchaos · 21/06/2017 00:22

I like your thinking! But yes, too early to ask a neighbour.

Do you have a tumble dryer? If so, Wash and tumble gently then hang when not quite dry.

utterchaos · 21/06/2017 00:23

Tumble dryer broke about 6 months ago Sad

(You may be sensing a theme here! Totally skint right now, so broken things tend to just stay broken!)

But that sounded like a great solution, thanks!

Straighteners?

utterchaos · 21/06/2017 00:26

Ooh - hold on. What's broken about the tumble dryer is that the drum doesn't go round. It still gets hot though, and is still sitting on top of the washing machine.

Would just the heat be enough I wonder?

OP posts:
utterchaos · 21/06/2017 00:27

No straighteners. Hairdryer?!

Boil water and hang the dress over a bowl of boiled water in an enclosed space (airing cupboard?) Do it a couple of times may give the same effect as bath/shower? I don't think the tumble drier will work if it's not going round because it'll just sit there and the creases will dry in if it's not moving?
Good Luck!

Don't suppose you've got a steamer?

Crumbs1 · 21/06/2017 00:35

Run a bath starting with cold then add hot. Leave dresses hanging in steamy bathroom with the door closed.
In truth, don't worry as nobody will notice and in this heat creases aren't going to stay in material very long.

SofaToad · 21/06/2017 00:53

Spray with water, blow with a hairdryer, smoothing at the same time.

Aquamarine1029 · 21/06/2017 03:54

Wet towel in the dryer with whatever you're trying to straighten out. Works like a charm.

BigYellowJumper · 21/06/2017 04:33

Hair dryer always works for me. Get the clothes a bit damp and then dry it.

Or hang your dress outside somewhere. I don't have a garden but I hang stuff in the open window if I need to.

Itsallamysterytome · 21/06/2017 05:05

Hairdryer will do it. Dress on a hanger and pull the material so it is taut, then use the hairdryer.
