Induction. Tomorrow I'm being induced due to being 42 weeks. I'm terrified of it due to figure etc like 90% emergency C-section rate and a much higher chance of things going wrong in general so I really don't want to be induced.

Any advice on how to kick things off? This is my last chance to go into labour before induction and I'm desperate. Help!!!

You've probably tried all the usual suspects, but stairs are good - as climb up and down them, a lot. Sex, hot curry, pineapple...

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 20/06/2017 20:11

Oh, and try not to worry too much if you do have to be induced, the high c-section rates are higher for lots of reasons, it doesn't only include women who ate induced "just" because they've gone over. Good luck!

MsVestibule · 20/06/2017 20:13

I was induced with DC2 at 42+1 and I didn't even realise it put me in a higher risk category for a caesarean!! Probably just as well I didn't google it at the time.

Honestly, apart from the contractions being really quite hurty, I didn't experience any problems. Presumably you've tried long walks, curries and nipple stimulation?

Changedtocovermyass · 20/06/2017 20:15

All the clary sage in a bath!
Bouncing on a ball thingy? Best of!

knowler · 20/06/2017 20:18

It's not a 90% emcs rate with induction!! Please don't worry yourself. I was induced at 42 weeks as I couldn't bear being pregnant anymore (!) and I've got to say, as a birth experience, I preferred it to my first non-induced one. It was so much quicker and I only had to push for 9 minutes. Yes, it can be painful, but get on the gas and air asap which will help. Best of luck. At least you know you will have your baby soon!

CeCeBloomer · 20/06/2017 20:20

I have had 2 emcs and they were both absolutely fine, don't worry if it ends up that way

Littlecaf · 20/06/2017 20:22

I was induced with DS and despite the midwife/doc saying the pessary wouldn't work, it did, and the same as a poster above, the contractions hurt but 9hrs later, in the pool we had a lovely baby.

No expert but I would be v surprised if the EMCS rate post induction was 90%. Where's that figure from?!

SuperRainbows · 20/06/2017 20:24

I too had an induction at 42 weeks and didn't realise the increased risk of cesarean either.
What I found hardest was the strict timing for turning up the contraction inducing drug. I asked them if they could space out the increases but they said they couldn't.
This was 15 years ago, so there may be a bit more flexibility now if you think that may help.
DD was 10lb!
Good luck tomorrow.

Littlecaf · 20/06/2017 20:24

Ps 9hrs was from start to finish. Only in established Labour from 8pm (started at 12.30pm) so only and hour or so Of awful pain and 20mins of pushing.)

Nelly5678 · 20/06/2017 20:26

Thank God. I planned a water birth and was terrified it would jeopardize that too. I've tried EVERYTHING and nothing is working. Apparently it's an old statistic but I got it from another poster on a different forum as it's an old NHS one apparently and it just scared my shitless 0.o

GET THE HOOVER OUT!!
got things going for me more than once!! Whole house +stairs.

jollyjester · 20/06/2017 20:27

I was induced with dc2 was dreading it but it was fine.

I was monitored closely throughout and pain was completely grand. I even made it to the mlu where I was told no baby for another few hours and she popped out after 20 mins!

user98765432101 · 20/06/2017 20:32

Is this your first dc?

I was induced at 42+2 with my first and yes it ended in emcs due to not progressing. It really wasn't that bad. And I've gone on to have 3 perfect vbacs.

Go in with an open mind, whatever happens will happen and you will have your baby really soon. Many people are induced and have normal births as well but water birth is unlikely as you will probably be monitored throughout.

Good luck

MagicMojito · 20/06/2017 20:33

Ive had two inductions, one planned and one that i wasnt even aware of at the time of having it Blush

Tbh its really not that bad in my experience. Its going to hurt no matter what route you take.
There was no epic drama that unfolded through me being induced, and nothing that wasnt manageable with pain releif (i had morphine, bloody good stuff!) Smile
Good luck Flowers

FanaticalFox · 20/06/2017 20:36

I was induced at 42+1 and it worked on the first pessary but in the end i did have a c section BUT it was a very calm lovely experience i would actually opt for a planned c section next time personally as both me and my husband enjoyed it (as far as giving birth is enjoyable!) They told us the position of baby's head would have meant she would never have come on her own and examinations would not have picked it up so just one of those things. So don't beat yourself up about it, do all the old wives tale things but they may not work. But keep trying anyway. All the midwives told me the only thing that really works is sex!

olympicsrock · 20/06/2017 20:47

If you are induced you need an epidural before they start any drips or break your water.

BoomBoomsCousin · 20/06/2017 21:03

The NHS has c-sections at 22% for induced deliveries (www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/induction-labour.aspx). Nowhere near 90%.

According to this paper, compared with expectant management, induction seems to be associated with a lower rate of c-section:
www.ajog.org/article/S0002-9378(06)00888-X/fulltext

Try not to get too worried OP. Even if you don't manage to go into labour naturally, your chances of a regular delivery are higher than not.

underneaththeash · 20/06/2017 21:39

I wasn't induced with DS1 and at 42 weeks my placenta failed which left DS in special care and me in HDU for several days after a ventouse delivery.

Was induced with DC2&DC3, textbook 8 hr delivery with no complications.

Octopus37 · 20/06/2017 21:47

I was induced with DS2 as I was 12 days overdue. I had an epidural at the same time as being put on a drip. I had my waters broken 2 and a half hours prior to that and was probably about 5cm when put on a drip. Whole process then took less than 3 hours with no pain cause of the epidural. Was fine, good luck

Maximo1 · 20/06/2017 22:12

I was induced at 42+2 days with my 2nd. They put the pessary in at 3pm and was told nothing would happen for at least 24hours.
I sent dh home and laid enjoying my book. By 9pm I was having mild contractions but fell asleep. Had a little chat with the midwife and a check up at 12am and my watersbroke at 00.30. My dd was born at 1.22am.
My first took 17 hours!
The only thing I would say for me is that I seemed to go from 1 to 10 very quickly and it was much more intense.
I much preferred the second time experience. One way or another that baby is coming and it won't be long before he/she is in your arms.
Good luck op.

ConConstance · 20/06/2017 22:35

Nipple stimulation. Google it so you know your doing it correctly. You should feel contractions straight away.

I only tried it once. Had small contractions straight after And waters broke 12 hours later.

Good luck

snoopypoodle · 20/06/2017 22:41

With DS I was supposed to be induced on a Monday and went into labour the Friday before thanks to burnt garlic bread and sex Wink

PositiveAttitude · 20/06/2017 22:41

Have sex tonight. Worked for me with DS. Midwife told me this was the natural way to induce. Previous to that I had 3 induced labours. No problems with any of the labours.

Good luck. Flowers

AlfieTheRailwayCat · 20/06/2017 22:54

I was induced and only usedvgas and air for pain relief so it doesn't always mean the contractions are worse, I also only had a three and a half labour so can be quick too!

MsVestibule · 20/06/2017 23:35

I tried to get DH to have sex with me to bring on labour, but he refused. It's only now I look at the photos of me at that stage that I can see why Grin.

If I'd known about nipple stimulation at the time, he might have been up for that, though.

OP, good luck and will you let us know how you get on? I was only in labour (induced at 42+1) for less than four hours, and while it bloody well hurt, at least it was quick.
