AIBU to be a bit miffed they have closed school "because it's hot"?

My DC go to a fairly large primary school.
At lunchtime today the parent alert system texted everyone to say school was closed due to the heat, and everyone to pick up their DC asap. Oh and it will be closed tomorrow too. Currently trying to sort out emergency cover with relatives for my three.

Last week we were given standard "hot weather" email/written info about hats, suncream, water bottles etc. Sports day was also cancelled "due to the heat".

Fair enough that they don't want to give the kids heatstroke by doing outside sports day if it's steaming.
But AIBU in expecting a school to have sensible contingency planning for hot weather? Ok, it's 31 degrees today (we live in the SouthEast). It is hot.
But surely all the schools in London/Surrey/Kent/Berkshire/Bucks aren't closed til it cools down, are they?

Oh, and also as standard- when I was a kid, everyone stayed inside from 11-3. That was when the sun was at it's highest and there used to be public service ads saying 'stay inside'. Not alot happens at the hottest part of the day.

Everyone's been at work as normal so I would hope schools could adjust as necessary (no strenuous PE, not too long out in the sun etc) but still manage to function.

I've worked in some pretty miserable classrooms during heatwaves. The body heat drives the temperatures and humidity in the room up. The usual problems are flat roofs absorbing the heat (applies to both temporary blocks and 60s/ 70s blocks) and large windows with restricted opening capacity. I remember in 2006 when temperatures outside were about 33- 34oC and the classroom windows would open by no more than two inches.

The worst classrooms for heat were also the worst for cold in the winter.

FFS I hate the schools re there to educate not babysit children comments. Yes their function is to educate but those of us who work full time carefully plan in advance our child care for holidays etc and choose our working hours and care required based on the published school term dates. My work is flexible for my time off regarding ill children but come on it would be pretty hard to be told at lunchtime the school was closing at due to heat please come and collect now. I agree the heat is hard for the children but life goes on and suitable contingencies should be made. I am sure it's very hot in a lot of jobs etc right now but we can't close everything down!
