To think my DD's teacher is a complete cow for not letting the class laugh when watching the sex education video at school

I have two DD's both in different classes in year 6.

Last week, they had to watch the sex education video (periods, puberty etc etc)

One of my daughters teachers let the whole class have a laugh and giggle, generally heckle etc and there was much ribbing between the boys and the girls.

My other daughters teacher told them they were not allowed to laugh and she stood facing the whole class whilst the video was being played. My daughter described the bit where you get to see an infrared image of a male errection (I remember that when I was younger too -bloody hilarious) and she said it was AGONY not being able to laugh.

What worries me slightly is that she tends to find these things a bit embarrassing anyway and I don't think her teachers attitude helped.

Cow.

kids should try and control themselves a SMIdGIN when at school no?

I mean, yes its funny - well, embarrassing, obviously thats why they were laughing - but it was a lesson none the less

fryalot · 21/03/2007 10:20

But if they can learn something at the same time - why not let them laugh. If you spend half the time getting them to sit and listen, you've only got half the time left to teach them. If you can teach them whilst everyone's having a laugh, you've got the entire time. Surely that is better?

Hillary · 21/03/2007 10:22

You laugh when you're watching a good film don't you? You always forget the boring ones.

Enid · 21/03/2007 10:22

well it is quite hard to listen and laugh amongst yourselves at the same time

Enid · 21/03/2007 10:23

I didn't laugh last night watching Infernal Affairs

it was bloody good though

eg laughing isn't the only way to remember things unless you are one of those irritating people who have a nervous laugh whenever embarrassed or confronted

Hillary · 21/03/2007 10:25

They're children. People laugh out of nervousness too we all laughed, you have to have humour about these things or its morbidly boring, they play it so loud anyway its always heard above laughing.

Ali5 · 21/03/2007 10:43

Squonk, lol at your dp's lesson. Could never bring myself to shout 'vagina vagina' from my desk.
Some teachers just don't have that kind of style and need to conduct the lesson in a way they feel will get the best results. The worst part of Sex Ed is showing the parents the video beforehand, they handle it worse than the kids! Adults bring too much, erm, experience?
Surely we don't want our kids growing up thinking that Sex Ed should be taken lightly? Perhaps that's where the teacher was coming from.

Washersaurus · 21/03/2007 11:01

Oh Enid, I AM one of those irritating people who laugh out of nervousness etc - I just can't help it. Are you one of those irritating people who takes everything too seriously? [she says laughing nervously]

ScummyMummy · 21/03/2007 11:10

Oh God- my two will be expelled when they get to year 6 if they're not allowed to laugh during sex education. They are already totally fascinated and think the whole idea is hilarious. They were comparing their penises this morning while getting dressed and practically wetting themselves laughing until I said Oi- put those penises in some pants and get dressed immediately. They did as asked but little giggles were escaping them for about an hour afterward. I do pity their teachers, I really do.

Enid · 21/03/2007 11:18

yes washersaurus

Washersaurus · 21/03/2007 12:01

lol, Enid

NannyL · 22/03/2007 21:14

this thread has made me laugh so much

yes i think its completelu unreasonable not to allow them to laugh!

I agree some thinsg ARE funny, even if they are seriosue as well!

Baysmum · 22/03/2007 21:27

Ok, in defence of teachers (again) you try teaching 30 kids something ...anything... and let them piss about and laugh and shout out funny comments and then see how much they've taken in. Then wait for the next 'Am I being unreasonable' thread where parents then complain about how their child's teacher didnt take their sex ed class seriously enough. Now I shall go off in a huff...
